?xendines Are Proud I Of Children's Success AfMr more than fifty years of ? marriage, Thomas and Georgie Oxendine looked back over that half century at a ceremony attended recently by more than 500 people. The 73 - year - old Oxendine recalls how he met his wife many years ago. He was on his way to his favorite fishing spot, he said, and just happened to discover her. "It was a wonderful opportunity," he said with a smile. "I forsook all others for her." Oxendine was a teacher in Robeson County for 40 years, even though he has only a high school education, and they also farmed near Pembroke. But their pioudest accomplishment is the eight children they reared. Each of the children have had at least one year of college, financed mainly with part ? time work. The oldest, Thomas Oxendine. Jr.. 49. is a retired Navy commander who is thought to be the first American Indian commissioned, as a pilot in ihe Navy during World War II. He is now director of information for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. Another son. Earl, is principal at South Hoke School here, while Joseph is head of the physical education department at Temple University in Philadelphia. Robert is a truck driver in Spartanburg and Lewis is a parts distributor for an automobile company in Warren. Mich. A daughter. Mrs. Charles Griffith, is a business education instructor at Pembroke State University and the Oxendine's twins. Ruth and Roy are the >oungesl of the family. Mrs. Ruth Hunevich of Berkely. Mich, is a former elementary school teacher and is now a housewife and Roy is a football and baseball coach at Catawba College in Salisbury Oxendine, seated in an easy chair in their small farm house. said he never dreamed his children would accomplish what they have. Earl Oxendine said that the importance of getting a good education was instilled in the youngsters from earliest childhood. The elder Oxendines received congratulations on their anniversary from President Richard Nixon and Gov. Bob Scott. Attending the anniversary celebration from Hoke County were Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Abernethy; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sutton; Mr. and Mrs. J.D. McAllister; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Burnett; Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Wood. Jr.; Mr and Mrs Robert Flowers and Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Bledsoe. Social Security * News c. V SHE (.TON FIELD REPRESENTATIVE Fayattavilla Social Sacurity Oltica Women workers under Social Security often wonder, "Of what advantage is Social Security to me, since my husband works and 1 could qualify on his record?" There are many advantages to the woman who has worked under Social Security, in addition to those to be derived from her husband's work record. The three basic considerations are these 1 In the event of the death of a woman worker. Social Security will make monthly Social Security payments to her minor children, a disabled child or any of her children who are between the ages of 18 and 22 and who are full - time students. These payments are made despite the fact that prior to her death her husband was supporting the children. 2. If the woman worker becomes disabled, she may qualify tor monthly disability benefits and there would be supplemental payments for any qualified children as explained in I. above. These payments are also made despite the fact that the husband is in the household and able to support his wife and their children. 3. Both men and women may elect to receive retirement benefits from Social Security at age 62. However, in the case of the woman worker who has worked fairly regularly up to age 62. she would be entitled to a larger payment on her own work record than she could get as a wife on her husband's account. Also, in the case of the deceased woman worker, there is always a lump sum death payment which is payable to her surviving "living with" widower or to whoever has paid or is responsible for her burial expenses. Stoneybrook Plans Meet The Stoneybrook Race Meet celebrates its 25th Anniversary on April 15 with bigger purses, more big name guests, more big name entries and?he promise of bigger crowds than ever before. In 1971. 20.000 people watched the races at Southern Pines on Michael G. Walsh's Stoneybrook Farm. The 1970 crowd was estimated at 15.000. In an interview Tuesday William H. Frantz. Chairman of the Stoneybrook Hunt Racing Association explained that the Stoneybrook purses are to be increased from SI 1.100 in 1971 to SI 5,000 in 1972. In addition, he said, the six hunts meets on the Dixie Circuit (Atlanta. Aiken. Camden. Tryon. Southern Pines and Winston ? Salem) are each contributing S500 toward a $3,000 purse to be won by the four horses winning the most races over fences at the six Dixie meets. Frantz explained that the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association is building up the hunt, race meets and asking substantial increases in purse money to offset cutbacks in steeplechasing at the New York tracks. Profits of the Stoneybrook Race Meet go for the benefit of St. Joseph's Hospital in Southern Pines and several other causes. Invitations were mailed Feb 28 to those wishing to attend the Races in reserved parking spaces, those who would like to become racing members for the day, and those interested in the gala Stonevbrook Race Ball. Those wishing to have their names on the mailing list should write to the Stoneybrook Hunt Racing Association. Southern Pines. N'.C. Legals CREDITOR S NOTICE ?
