What I meant, of coune. wai that many of the Biblical characters are quite like people today in terms of their problems and concerns. What the Bible tells us about these characters is often very helpful in understanding people and life in our own time. For example in John 12 we find Jesus encountering three types of people who are not strangers to our contemporary religious scene. "Yet they did not believe..." The first of these is the person who is determined not to believe regardless of what man or God does to convince him. The late educator and philosopher Gaude Ducasse noted that in many people the "will to disbelieve" is one of the controlling factors of life. As blindly as some people cling to superstition, these people, perhaps irrationally, cling to their disbelief. Jesus acknowledged this kind of person in his parable of "Dives" and "Lazarus." Noting that Dives wanted Lazarus to return from the dead to warn his brothers against disbelief, Jesus observed that some people would not believe even if they saw a man rising from the dead. Thus, too, John tells us: "Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in No matter how many dramatic works Jesus might perform, some people are determined to remain unconvinced. Many of us come into contact with that type of person every day. In them, disbelief is nothing less than an act of will. , ? "They loved the praise of men..." A second contemporary type is the person who believes in Christ but does not acknowledge it except privately. John tells us of this type of person: "...many even of the authorities believe in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it..." Why? The answer: "...lest they should be put out of the synagogue" (12:42). It is often amazing to me what people will do to persuade you that, although they have a religious affiliation, they do not take it seriously. Nothing seems to unnerve them so much than that someone will think they- are serious about their faith. John knew the reason: "For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of Cod." (12:43). That's not so ancient an emotion, is it? The third type of person is probably even more common: the person who acknowledges his faith, but fails to put it into practice. Jesus warns those people: "If any one hears my sayings and does not keep them..." (12:47). The consequence. Jesus says, is not that Jesus will judge that person, but that the person will deny himself of the most This Is The Law John Walker and his wife adopt a child. Subsequently John dies. Later his father dies without a will. Can the adopted child inherit anything from the estate of John's father.? Yes. The adopted child will be the representative of his adoptive father, "stand in the shoes of his adoptive father," and take the share his adoptive father would have received had he been alive. A child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hudson is formally adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Smith. Henry Hudson dies without a will. Does the child inherit anything from the estate of Henry Hudson? No. The child does not inherit from Henry Hudson or any of his relatives. There are no longer any legal ties connecting the child with his natural parents. Henry Hudson could have, of course, left property to the child by will. Sidney Sutton in his wQI leaves property to "the children of Thomas Taylor." Does a child adopted by Thomas Taylor take anything under the testamentary provision? Yes. Unless the contrary plainly appears by the terms of the will, both the adopted and natural children of Thomas Taylor inherit alike. It would be immaterial as to whether the will was executed before or after the adoption. The same result would have occurred if the testator had bequeathed the properly to "the issues of [Thomas Taylor" or to "the heirs or descendants of Thomas Taylor." But, on the other hand, if the testator had used such terms as "born to," "bodily heirs," "heirs of the body," or "lawfully begotten heirs of the body," adopted children of Thomas Taylor would be excluded. A testator should be allowed to give his property exclusively to those of his own blood if he so desires. But in the absence of a clearly manifested intention in his will, there is in North Carolina no presumption that the testator intended to limit the beneficiaries of his estate to those of his own blood. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1973 Read 1 John 3:1-3 The angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold. I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people." (Luke 2:10) One holiday season our church bulletin carried this announcement: "The angel wings that have been used in Christmas programs have been misplaced. If you know their whereabouts, please contact the church office." As Christmas approaches, all of us frantically search for our angel wings, because this is the time when for a brief period we lay aside selfish attitudes, petty differences, undue criticisms, and extend ourselves to bring happiness to others. But we cannot find our wings by making a telephone call or by running an advertisement in the newspaper. Although we are, admittedly, a little lower than the angels (angel literally means "messenger"), we c?n imitate their ways by offering to serve God. Havt we been so busy baking fancy cookies, addressing cards, shopping for gifts, and putting up decorations that we have neglected to look for our wings? PRAYER: Dear heavenly Father, help us to find our wings, dust them off, and us? them to further Your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
