Less than half a mile awav at the intersection of Harmonv Heights Rnnri and Rural Paved Road 1303, the county maintains a large metal container. A second county maintained trash container is located not more than a mile away at U.S. 401 and Rural paved Road 1303. (N-J Photo) DeVane Will Quit Squad Danny DeVane, Hoke County Rescue Squad commander, announced this week he will resign from the squad upon completion of his present term of office January 1. DeVane, who has been on the squad a little over two years, says he is unable to continue devoting so much time to the squad. 'There are times t have to close my business to answer a call and then find we really aren't needed. 1 can't afford that." "This is the best, most outstanding, well-trained and equipped squad in the state but there is need for improvement in communications between the resuce squad and law enforcement agencies on notification," stressed the former squad treasurer DeVane. He says he hopes to accomplish one more goal before leaving the squad; complete an accident policy contract to L'over Rescue Squad workers while they are working a call. The squad will hold annual elections at their December 19 meeting. Nominees for commander are BOl Parker and Earl Conoly; executive vice commander (public relations), Ronnie W0son and Neil Smith; treasurer. Bobby Conoly; secretary, Charles Tew; and vice commander (equipment man), Jim Wade. Man Injured, Another Held An Antioch man is being held in jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and another man is being treated at Duke Hospital in Durham for racial wounds resulting from a shooting incident Sunday. Harlie Cummings was shot in the right side of the face with peOets allegedly fired by # 410 gauge shotgun at the home of hit accused attacker, Weldoft LocMear, 31. Personnel at Southeastern General Hospital reported the shooting to the Hoke County Sheriffs Department when Cummings arrived for treatment Sunday. Cummings was later transferred to Duke. LocMear ia being held without bond pending a December 21 appearance In district court. Two Shannon residents were injured in a Saturday mid-morning one car accident on Cart hedge Road near Shannon. Geneva Locklear, driver, reportedly was adjusting the heater'on her car when she left the road. She reportedly swerved back across the road and struck a tree. She and Moddie Locklear, her daughter, a passenger in the car, were taken to Southeastern General Hospital and treated for injuries. Investigating officer. Trooper E.W. Coen, estimated the damage to the Locklear car at 1400. Trooper Coen reported three injured in a 5 p.m. Friday accident involving two cars. Bonnie Jacobs, driver, and unidentified passenger in her car, and Margaret Hunt Dial, driver of the second car, were treated and released at Scotland Memorial Hospital after Mrs. Jacobs reportedly pulled into the left lane of traffic to avoid hitting a stopped vehicle in her lane and hit the Dial car head-on. r Area Incidents = Both cars were estimated total losses. Mrs. Jacobs was cited for unsafe movement. Ill a 7:15 a.m. wreck Dec. 5, a tractor trailer reportedly driven by Mr. Deese, 18, of Maxton, struck a car driven by Brantley Allen, Hillcrest Community, while both were traveling on U.S. 401 towards Fayetteville. According to investigating Trooper Coen, Deese tried to pass the Allen car saw he couldn't and reportedly pulled back into the lane behind the car striking it. Allen was taken to Highsmith Rainey Memorial Hospital. Trooper Coen estimated the damages to the Allen car at $300 and cited Deese with failure to decrease speed. Crawford Thomas Jr. reported to police that a King size bed spread and blanket valued at $65 were taken from a clothes dryer at Lipscomb's Laundry. According to police reports, Mrs. Thomas had put the items in the dryer and left, then returned to find them missing. Thirty-nine hogs valued at $3,120 and a chain saw valued at $100 were reported taken from the Timberland Hog F arm three miles from Raeford early December 5. Sheriff's reports say the chains on the gates to the farm were cut. The H.P. Walters home, Five Points, was reportedly broken into between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. December 4. Walters reported he returned home and found the door broken open and several guns and items missing. Listed as missing were a shotgun, a target pistol, a rifle, a gun cleaning kit, a pair of boots, and a small amount of cash. Damage to the door was listed as $75 making total value of missing items and damage S3S3. Seventy-four gallons of gasoline was reportedly taken from four State trucks while parked at the State garage Dec. 4. Sheriff Department is investigating the theft. Joe Norris, Fayetteville, reported a stove valued at S250 and a refrigerator taken from a new house under construction in Stonewall Township Dec. 2. A window glass under the car port was reported broken. U.T. Locklear. Stonewall Township, reported a chainsaw valued at SI70 taken from his porch Saturday.
