Veterans Corner
EDITOR'S NOTE: Veterans and their
families are asking thousands of
questions concerning the benefits their
Government provides for them through
the Veterans Administration. Below are
some representative queries. Additional
information may be obtained at any VA
office.
Q - I was honorably discharged about
20 years ago after four years of military
service. Am I still eligible for a G1 loan?
A - Yes. The Veterans' Housing Act
of 1970 removed deadlines for using G1
loan entitlement for veterans of World
War II and later periods.
Q - 1 am a veteran with a 60 percent
service connected disability. Will the
Veterans Administration pay me
additional compensation for my son
who was born two months ago?
A - Yes, provided you file a claim
within one year of your son's birth.
Q - The Veterans Administration
turned down my disability claim, and
I'd like to contest the decision. How do
I go about doing this?
A - You should, within a year, file a
notice of disagreement with your state
VA regional office, which will review
the claim and provide a statement of
facts. If still not satisfied with the
decision, you may appeal it to the VA
Board of Appeals in Washington. You
may appear in person, or have someone
or an organization represent you.

Agents' Notes
Homemakers who prefer natural
products are finding a solution to their
cleaning needs in baking soda. It's pure
and safe, won't scratch, and doesn't
pollute. Like a magic genie, baking soda
can replace a whole shelf full of
specialized cleaners.
In The Kitchen
Refrigerator: Clean and deodorize
inside and out with a solution of three
tablespoons baking soda per quart of
water. After cleaning, leave a box of
soda, with top removed, in the
refrigerator to absorb odors as they
occur. Stir up the soda now and then, to
keep a fresh layer on top. After about
two months, put in a new box, and pour
the old box down the drains throughout
the house to make them fresher and
sweeter smelling.
Range (Exterior): A baking soda
solution will safely clean and deodorize
all types of surfaces. Use dry soda to
scour difficult spots. It doesn't scratch.
Chrome Trim: Clean with baking soda
solution and polish dry with sc*ft cloth.
Scour with dry soda if needed. It will
not scratch the trim.
Range top and backsplash: Use a
baking soda solution to wipe up grease
splatters. Use dry soda and a moist
sponge to scour off burned - on foods.
Good for conventional and smooth top
ranges.
Fire: Keep a coffee can filled with
dry soda close to the range. If a grease
fire should occur, toss handfuls of soda
at the base of the flames. When heated,
the soda releases carbon dioxide and
immediately extinguishes the flames.
Then simply rinse the soda off the food,
and start cooking again. Soda's pure and
safe - won't hurt the food.
Dishwasher: A handful of baking
soda sprinkled over the bottom of the
machine helps reduce odor build - up
when dishes are left in the dishwasher
for any period of time.
General Cleaning
Floors: Use dry baking soda on a
dampened sponge to remove black
heelmarks and other difficult stains.
Rugs: To remove grease stains, rub
dry baking soda into nap. Let stand.
Vacuum.
Painted walls, woodwork, washable
wallpaper: Wash with solution of 3
tablespoons baking soda per gallon of
water.
