The Hoke County Recreation
Department, Hoke County Gid Scouts,
-tad the 35th Signal Group, Ft. Bragg,
tee sponsoring a swimming camp for
boys and girls, ages six to twelve years.
Lessons will be taught by certified Red
Cross personnel. Registration is on a
Tirst come-first served" basis.
;? The camp will be held at Ft. Bragg's
Music Scholarship
"< WILSON, N. C. - Lester G. Southern
of Raeford, has been named recipient of
an honor scholarship in music at
Atlantic Christian College, according to
an announcement by J. Ross Albert,
acting chairman of the ACC Department
of Music.
Valued at $ 1,500, the scholarship is
available to incoming freshman who
plan to major in music.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Gray
Southern, Box 739, Raeford, is a Hoke
County High School senior.
Smith Lake July 22 through July 26
and July 29 through Aug. 2 (10 day*).
Swimmers will be transported by bus,
leaving Raeford from the National
Guard Armory at 8 a.m. and returning
to the armory at 1 p.m. Parents must
make arrangements for the swimmers
to be picked up promptly.
There will be no charge for the
swimming lessons but a fee of SI .25 per
child must be paid for supplies and
crafts to be used when the swimmers are
not in the water.
Each day swimmers must provide
their own towels, swim suits (or extra
shirt and shorts,) and plastic bags for
wet clothes for return trip. Shoes must
be worn at all times except when in the
water. Clothes should be marked with
swimmers's name to avoid confusion.
Application forms may be obtained
at Howell Rexall Drug Co. and Hoke
Drug Co., both on Main Street.

receive a SI50 Lucy Smith Scholarship
Award.
Under the Lucy Smith Scholarship
Program, sponsored by the local tMC.
four scholarships are awarded annually:
two S500 scholarships for university
and two SI 50 scholarships for technical
or business school.
Miss Farmer. daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Alex Farmer of Route I,is
a senior at Hoke County High School
and plans to enter Fayetteville
Technical Institute in the fall to major
in Secretarial Science.
She has been a member of the French
Club. Pep Club. FFA. Fellowship of
Christian Athletes. Chorus and Chorale.
She has held various offices in the
student council, has been a cheerleader
and a member of the senior executive
committee.

TO GRADUATE - Kalhy McDowell,

District Court News
Correction
Last week it was incorrectly reported
that James Alex Saunders, $14 Green
St., was convicted of DU1 second
offense and driving with a revoked
license in District Court May 10. The
Hoke County Clerk of Court's office
corrected records to show James Alex
Saunders, was convicted of DUI, third
offense and driving with a revoked
license.
Four men were convicted of DUI in
District Court Friday.
Robert Connell Virgil, Rt. 2,
convicted of DUI and driving with a
revoked license, received 18 months
suspended three and one half years
upon payment of S4S0 fine and costs,
and on condition he follow
rehabilitation guidance. He was placed
on three and one half years probation.
Alexander Elliott, Spring Lake,
convicted of DUI, received six months.
Hershel Elbert Kerr, Sebring, Fla.,
convictcd of DUI, received six months
suspended two years upon surrender of
his license for 1 2 months and payment
of $200 fine and costs. He was placed
on two-years probation.
Willie Eddie Gray, Fayetteville,
convicted of DUI, received six months
suspended (wo years upon surrender of
his license and payment of $250 fine
and costs. He was placed on two-years
probation with condition he follow
rehabilitation guidance.
Clem Thomas Ray, Rt. 3, convicted
of DUI and driving without a license,
received six months suspended two
years upon condition he not drive until
properly licensed and payment of $200
fine and costs. He was placed on two
years probation with condition he
follow rehabilitation guidance.
John E. Rochester, Ft. Bragg,
convicted on two counts of driving with
a revoked license, received three years
suspended three and one half years
upon condition he not drive until
properly licensed and payment of $400
fine and costs. He was placed on three
and one half years probation.
John Lindsey Cecil, Antioch
Community, convicted of permitting an
unlicensed person to drive, received 30
days suspended upon payment of $25
fine and costs.
Uranison Cobb, Rt. 2. convicted of
careless and reckless driving having no
financial responsibility and inspection
and registration violations, received six
months suspended two years upon
condition he no drive for two years and
pay SI SO fine and costs. He was placed
on two-years probation.
Ruby Jean Jackson, Ft. Bragg,
convicted of careless and reckless
driving and speeding, received 30 days
suspended upon payment of $50 fine
and costs.
Willie Curtis Bradford, Ft. Bragg,
convicted of careless and reckless
driving, received 30 days suspended
upon payment of $50 fine and costs.
John Wayne Locklear, Rt. 1,
convicted of careless and recklcss
driving, received 90 days suspended
upon payment of $100 fine and costs.

DUI charge.
James William Pierce, Jones Avenue,
convicted of speeding, received 30 days
suspended upon payment of S2S fine
and costs.
Mansfield Hollingsworth Creech,
Kinston was convicted of speeding and
prayer for judgement was continued
upon payment of costs.
Harold Edward Jones, Wade, was
convicted of speeding. Prayer for
judgement was continued upon
payment of costs.
Nathan Russell McLaurin,
Fayetteville, was convicted of speeding.
Prayer for judgement was continued
upon payment of costs.
Raymond Newman Jr., Ft. Bragg,
convicted of improper passing, received
30 days suspended upon payment of
costs.
Edwin Allen Abbate, Ft. Bragg,
convicted of forcible trespassing,
received one day to two years as a
youthful offender, suspended three and
one half years upon condition he not go
on the property of or molest the
prosecuting witness and pay $300 fine
and costs. The defendent gave notice of
appeal and appeal bond was set at
$1,000. The state took nol pros on a
companion charge of indecent exposure.
Eugene Campbell, Edinborough
Avenue, convicted of being a common
law public nuisance, received six
months. Judge Joseph E. Dupree says he
gave verbal instructions in open court
that the commitment be delayed. He
further reports he told the defendant,
"You have 10 days to appeal this case.
If you do not appeal and are returned to
this court for any crimc, I intend to
activate this sentence."
Thomas Ray, Rt. 3, waived
preliminary hearing on charges of
making a false affadavit to obtain a
drivers license. He was bound over to
the Hoke County Superior Court for
grand jury action. His $500 bond was
continued.
Dale Badcr, Rt. I, was convicted of
carrying a concealed weapon. Prayer for
judgement was continued upon
payment of costs. He was placed on
15-months probation.
Kenneth Gabley, Harmony Heights,
convicted of possessing a
controlled substance, less than one
ounce of marijuana, received one day to
six months suspended two years upon
condition he violate no narcotic control
laws for two years and pay SI50 fine
and costs. For good cause shown, $50
of the fine and all costs were remitted.
The state took nol pros on cases
charging Jay Morris O'Hern, Laurinburg,
with DUI; Timothy Shelton Hasty, 808
E. Donaldson St., with registration
violation; Donald Dean Detse, Ashley
Heights with safety ^equipment
violation; and Evertan Chavis,
Laurinburg. with forcible trespassing
and assault by pointing a gun.
