MacDonalds. Macbacharn, MacLean, MacNeill, Norton, Shaw? The Rev. Donald Budge, author of "Jura, an Island of Argyll," thinks there are. "Jura..." was given as a memorial to Bradley McDowell Norton, Dec. 20, 1911 - Oct. 20, 1954. His ancestors, referred to in this book, are recorded by Margaret F. Moore, genealogist. 31 St. Bernard's Crescent, Edinburgh. Scotland. "Jura..." begins with a geographic description, proceeds to its history from early days through the era of Norse pillaging and plundering to the rise to power of the Lords of the Isles, through the turbulent history of 16th and 17th centuries. The latter part of the book is devoted to such subjects as emigration, schooling, trade, agriculture. Jura surnames and island ties. Those whose forbears have played a part in the shaping of Jura's history will find much of interest here. (941) "Skinful of Scotch" by Clifford Haney. takes you. in a calculatedly Accent On Agriculture From health - giving milk and natural butter to flavorful cheeses and popular ice cream, those outstanding dairy foods that start with the cow depend on some help from others, too. For example, modern farm machinery helps ... to produce and harvest feed crops faster and better ... to care for the cow and to milk her ... to make dairy farming more efficient. But that's just part of the story. It's the man who cares for the cow ... the dairy farmer ... who makes the difference ... with his hard work, his knowledge, experience and sound business management. All consumers should be proud to salute the dairy farmer - not just during June, but throughout the year. Unfortunately, the dairy situation has changed drastically during the last few years. Many producers are going out of business, while others are reducing their milk herd because of the high costs of production. Farm labor problems and skyrocketing feed costs have placed many dairymen in an unbearable cost ? price squeeze. Add to this the high costs and shortages of fertilizers, rising credit costs, and a decrease in milk consumption, and the prospect for a continued plentiful milk supply becomes highly questionable. North Carolina cannot afford to have another dairy farmer forced out of business. For example, a producer milking slightly over 200 cows produces enough milk to supply around 6,200 people with three glasses of milk every day of the year. For food value received, fresh wholesome milk remains a good buy. This fact is made even clearer when you consider that many carbonated beverages, containing little if any food value, are priced about the same as milk. disheveled way, on a lour of the Scottish countryside and national lore. Kills. Scottish respectability, and dour tightfistedness are revealed more as fancy than fact. In addition to an eye-opening comparison of Edinburgh and Glasgow, the reader gels a tongue-wetting description of Scotch and how it is made...as well as irreverent stories of the Edinburgh Festival and Burns' songs. The text is superbly illustrated by more than 60 Hartley Ramsay drawings showing subjects which give flavor to this extraordinary land. (914.1) Clifford Haney was born and lives in Glasgow.
