Adult Education Classes Teach Reading, Writing And 'Rithmetic "You Cm" is ihe theme of a statewide campaign to reach people 18 years old or older who have for some reason been denied elementary education. The cm - do approach has always been emphasized by Sandhills Community College which conducts some two dozen classes in Adult Basic Education in Moore and Hoke counties. ABE classes are taught in Hoke County at Scurlock. South Hoke, Upchurch, Hoke High and West Hoke schools. Other ABE classes are held at Burlington and Raelord Turkey Farms. The classes provide free instruction in the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. The Sandhills Adult Basic Education program, which is headed by veteran educator Kddie B. C oleman, has to dale aided hundreds in learning to read and write and figure, and more than 600 have completed their high school education for an equivelancy certificate in Sandhills College classes. Wilkerson II, Tax Supervisor Bucks Win, Win, Win The Bucks picked up their tenth straight win of the season Friday night by downing Clinton 83-64 in the Southeastern Conference 3-A opener for both teams. George Maynor scored 31 points and Allen Thomas took 25. including 13 of 14 shots at the free throw line. Hoke was behind 8-4 in the early stages until the 6'l" Maynor exploded with 12 of the Bucks' next 14 points. James Rainey put the team in front 21-19 with four minutes left in the half. Maynor hit for six of the next 12 points, Allen Thomas connected with 1:17 to go. and Ronald Black scored on a free throw to give the Bucks a 36-25 half time edge. Maynor collected eight of the next 16 points in the third quarter, but the Dark Horses rallied against the surge and scored ten points in the quarter to narrow the g3p. 54-43. Maynor's 28th point brought it up to a 60-45 Hoke lead, and with four consecutive free throws by the 6'2" Thomas. Hoke held a 64-47 margin with a little more than five minutes left. The Dark Horses tried to close the gap too late, scoring 21 points to Hoke's 29 in the final quarter. A crowd of over 1.000 was on hand to see the victory. The Bucks hold five wins over class 4-A competition and a resounding victory over state I-A defending champion Maxton. The?Bucks?whipped?unoihet?4-A school Tuesday night to run their winning streak to eleven games. Laurinburg - Scotland was ihe latest casualty as Hoke pulled off a 84 - 71 win. It was the second time this year that the Bucks have defeated Scotland. Scoring honors went to Alphonso Hayncs with 26 points for the game. Closely trailing him was Allen Thomas. James Rainey collected 14 and Ronald Black dumped in 12. George May not, collected nine points. Scotland was paced by LJ. Pipkin, who had 23. Other Scots in th< double figures were Chip McDonald with 17, John Williams with 14. George Melton with 14 and Michael Purdie with 10. Hoke ended the first quarter on the minus side, trailing Scotland 16-15. But the Bucks bounced hack in the second quarter to outscore Laurinbuig 26-17. They went into the halftime break with a comfortable 45-37 advantage. A 21 - point outburst in the third quarter put the game on ice, while Scotland scored only 14 points. This included five fast baskets for Hoke, with Thomas hitting a crip shot followed by a Haynes steal, a Maynor crip, a Rainey crip and a tipin by Rainey. With the score 65-48, the Bucks settled back to swap baskets with Scotland. The Bucks will meet Dunn in a conference game tomorrow night at Hoke High. In a preliminary game, Hoke's JVs lost to Scotland 46-45. The Bucks JVs defeated Clinton JVs last Friday night 56-4S.
