By Frances Ldwards Mow did weights and measures develop'' When did the metric system come into existence? Why is the t!S "the last to go metric"? Fiank Ross gives answers to these and othei relevant questions in his comprehenisve and invaluable study. "The Metric System: Measures for All Mankind." (S8.95.) Ross gives the pros and cons of adopting the metric system in the US: chances aie growing that we will soon join the international community using metric measurement so the author has given useful appendices of tables of metric weights and measures with their American equivalents and glossary. At this writing, the US is the only major nation continuing the use of a modified arrangement of the British imperial measurements. More than 90 percent of the people of the world use the metric system as their official language of measurements. Over 75'; of the world's industry, agricultural production and commerce is carried on with the use of the metric system. One of the last of the major nations to join the family of metric users was Great Britain, in May 1965. It would seem that the key element in a conversion program is education. - AREA INCIDENTS - Conlinued from page I about S10 winth of food iterns removed from the lunchroom freezer. In other incidents, thieves did damage estimated at SI ,000 to a well located on a building site on Airport Road, according to Fred L. Foster A water heater and tank valued at SI85 were hauled off. A Fairmont resident reported lie was beaten and robbed by two men he gave a ride to in Laurinhuig. James Chavis told deputies he picked up two black males in Laurinburg and after crossing the county line, the pair attacked him and robbed him of S.JO. The laurinburg police are investigating, according to the complaint. Kenneth Keartts, Ashley Heights, complained his home was entered Jan. 7 and stereo equipment valued at $J00 was stolen. Entry was made by forcing the front door, according to the report. Lawrence Stanton, manager of the county landfill, reported the hasp on the office door was broken the night of Jan. 6 and two five gallon cans were used to steal thirty gallons of oil. according to the pump reading. The thief made off with the cans, apparently. A raid staged by Cumberland County deputies netted a $272 vacuum cleaner reported stolen last month from the Pliilippi Presbyterian Church. Beginning 111 the primary schools, the metric system was the only system of measurements taught; the general public was and is being educated into the metric language by British newspapers, maga/ines. posters, ladio and TV. A demonstration centei was established where Biitons could* pi act ice purchasing food. clothing, and othei items using tnetiic units. Now. almost 10 years laiei. I ngland iinds thai the changeovei has worked oui with lemarkable smoothness. None of the dire piedietions made by opponents to the change public confusion, chaos in industry, staggering cost ?? have developed. One of the cailiest and largest American groups to make a change was the phaimaceutical industry in the nud ? IPeople in related fields such as doctors, pharmacists, hospital staffs have joined in the use of the language. Scientists too have made significant advances toward adopting the metric system. Numerous branches of engineering use only metric measures especially laige Ameiican corporations with factories in foreign countries. The automotive industry is moving in this direction though its conversion may be a bit more complicated because of the huge numbers of vehicles produced annually and the hundreds of pans involved in each cat. Because thousands of foreign ? built cars are rolling along American highways, auto mechanics find it necessary to equip themselves with tools made to metric standards. NASA engaged in some of the most exciting technical accomplishments of this century, including the landing ol men on the moon, adopted the metric system in 1 *>71. There are highway signs m Ohio that indicate mileage in both kilometers and miles (I km - .(> mile). Despite (he general apathy of otu ledeial government, the U.S. is likely to become a member of the world family of metric users in the not too distant fu tine. Bookmobile Schedule MONTROSL.
