(i()IN(t UP -? Workers, Tuesday, hauled the eahlevision disk up the radio tower at the jail. Sunday School Lesson Contemporary Christians tend to regard different facets of congregational life as optional activities which are strictly a matter of personal preference. Some people come on Sundays to worship, hut that is the extent of their involvement. Others arc "Sunday school people" who come for Christian education but little else. Others seem to "major" in fellowship activities with little interest in anything else. Still others are service oriented, often with a faint aura of contempt for those who do not feel similarly motivated. ? LIGHT BILLS? Continued from page 1 includes the stove, a freezer and refrigerator, washing machine, water pump, television and an outside security light, he said. "It hurts now, to pay that much." Chavis said. "But it is really going to hurt if it hits S50." Mrs. Myrtle Locklear of Rt. I. Aberdeen, also on CP&L. reported frustration with economy measures. "The more I try to keep lights off. the more my bill goes up," she complained. She said she has switched to washing with cold water and only cooks one meal a day now. One person reported her bill actually went down this month. Mis. Annie Cummings of Antioch, who gets her electricity from he Lumhee River rural co-op. said her bill dropped from SI 5 last month to S.f this month. Because of news stories about rising electricity costs, she has reduced her usage of electricity, she said. Mis. Cummings said her family burns only one light and the television at night. 1 hey have turned their freezer to a warmer temperature also. ?SEWER Continued from page 1 and urged people to avoid that unneeded fire alarms. Little used drains often dry out and will permit smoke to enter buildings, the employee said. This can be avoided by making sure that floor drains and sanitary facilities arc filled with water, he said. ? However, he said, the smoke is harmless and will not strain interiors. There is a mild odor that will disperse with the smoke, according to the engineering firm. The tests are part of a waste water facility planning study. ?STOCKPILES? Continued from page I stricken aieas. A shipment of canned C - ration - type goods scheduled for Hoke County was diverted instead to West Pakistan after a devastating storm. Mrs. Laura Morris said. She has worked in the civil preparedness office here going hack to the days of civil defense and directors Alfred Cole and William t amont. Niven. a retired Air Force pilot, believes strongly in being prepared for both natural and man - made disasters. "People feel like civil preparedness is a waste of money." he said. "And maybe it is, if you don't ever need it. But if you do treed it..." The emergency supplies are just one Itnk in the chain of preparedness, he feels. "Wc have enough to lake care of our people, if we ever have to have it." We get a much different picture of the early church in the Book of Acts. Here we see the whole congregation devoting "themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship to the breaking of bread and of prayers" (2:42). The early church was clearly not divided into those who worshipped, those who studied, and those who pursued Christian fellowship. The whole congregation was involved in each ol these vital functions. Nor were the early Christians limited to activities of personal input: .many signs and wonders were done through the apostles . . . and all who believed were together and had all things in common" (2:43.44). There was output too! Their life as a congregation both strengthened them and equipped them to be of service to others as well, l'hey worshipped, studied and fellowshipped so that they could also perform "signs and wonders" of service for others. The results an- obvious: "And day by day, attending the temple togelhei and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all (he people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved" (2:40,47). ? YOUTHS? Continued from page I consideration and was tehuked hy the judge. Robert K. Williams, a Hoke High student, was given a suspended term as a youth offender and put on probation for five years alter pleading guilty to breaking and entering and larceny offenses occuring at Blanton's Grocery in Raeford. Clravis pleaded guilty to three counts of felonious larceny after the state agreed to drop three charges ol breaking and entering connected with the theft of television sets and guns in burglaries. A ten year prison term was suspended and he was put on probation for five years. Harry Scuilock. formerly of Raelord Hotel, was found not guilty in a jury trial on a chaige of forgery and uttering and passing a lorged check. Scuilock had been accused of forging the signature of Robert Webb. Raelord Hotel manager, to a check and cashing it at the Puppy Creek Grocery, last October. Two Hoke High students charged with breaking and entering and larceny in the burglary of a city home which netted S440 worth of goods were given suspended two year teims and put on probation for five yeais. Redell Clark. IK. and Roy N.Jacobs, 18. pleaded guilty and were also fined S250. Neither leportedly had a prioi police record. Donald McLean, pleaded guilty to three counts of larceny and received a suspended two year term and a live year probation period. McLean was named in the theft of batteries from Raeford Auto. Alinden Reid. a Sandhills Youth Center inmate, pleaded guilty to escape after a false start Monday morning Rcid had entered a guilty plea, then changed his mind and told the court "I'll take the jury". After conferring with /attorney William Geimer at Baileyls suggestion. Reid returned and pleaded guilty again. A 12-month sentence was imposed, to run concurrent with a present term being served. ,wvn ? , rfriiiwrilN I .>U, I V /3 vj f* i-yi | jh ? yT7 WTil =aw Lj wT f A J ? ? i? i ? i : m FOR SAI H: Brick home, T bedrooms. 2 baths, central air and heal, living room, den. garage and deck. Carson Davis, Jr. 501 Harris Ave. Phone 875-4870. TFC Obviously, worship cannot be divided off from nurture, fellowship, and service. If we are going to enrich our lives with worship, we will also need to grow in Christian love which requires fellowship and service. In writing to the early church. I Peter admonished Christians to major in all facets of Christian life: "keep sane and sober for your prayers" (4:7), "practice hospitality (4:1)), act as "good stewards" of what God has given us (4:10). In other words, whether we arc worshipping, studying, fellowshipping or serving our fellowmen. it is all one response of love for God. God is actually behind all of it. not just a portion: ". . .whoever speaks, as one who utters oracles of C.od: whoever renders service, as one who renders it by the strength which God supplies. . ." (4:11). The point is that "in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ". The power of the early church was that it led ?a well ? rounded congregational life in which worship, fellowship, nurture and service were all regarded as the believer's response to the grace of C.od as revealed in Christ. Jesus himself was an example. He had been a man of worship as he demonstrated many times. He had also been a man who studied the scriptures. He had also demonstrated his own need for fellowship and his whole life fellowship and his whole life was a life of sacrificial service. Worship, nurture, fellowship and service: for the Christian they are a matched - set. Service Personnel Army Staff Sergeant Connie L.
