Morris, Chairman of Hoke County Local Board No. 48, announced today. "Even though we are not currently drafting for military service," Morris said, "registering with Selective Service is still compulsory for all young men at age 18, so each young man should make certain that he complies with the law by registering," Chairman Morris stated that a young man has 60 days in which to register - 30 days before his 18th birthday and 30 days after. "This should provide adequate time for an 18-year-old or a nehr-1 8-year-old to register," the chairman added, "and his timely registration will prevent any problems that might otherwise result from a late registration." C Investigation Ends In Fire The investigation of a trailer fire in which a Bowmore man died Jan. 25 has ended with firemen stOI puzzled about the cause of the blaze. "I've walked around that trailer and sniffed dirt and tasted dirt but I can't find anything," North Raeford Fire Department chief George Baker said. Samuel Gates, 34, was found on the bedroom floor by North Raeford firemen who answered an alarm turned in at 2:30 a.m. on the 25th by a neighbor, Hattie Morris. 'This is the wierdest thing I've run into in a long time," he said. Baker said several aspects of the case were unusual: --Gates, who lived alone, was dressed in street clothing although it was early morning. - -The trailer was burned more thoroughly on both ends, possibly indicating lhat the fire started in both ends. - There was no heat or electricity in the trailer from which a fire could start. ?Gates had had another trader destroyed earlier when a power line connected to a nearby pole was blown down during a windstorm. He was not injured in that fire. According to a telephone report of the autopsy. Gates died of smoke inhalation. Sheriff D.M. Barrington said. Baker said that an opening found tn Gates neck that had appeared to have been a wound was caused instead by the intense heat of the fire, according to the autopsy. Funeral services for Gates, were held Jan. 2l) at Nazareth Baptist C hurch in Wagram by the Rev. S.E. Fairley. Burial was in Island Grove Cemetery. Gates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Purcell Gates: his mother. Mrs. Odessa Gates; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Marian. Mrs. Eva Harrigan and Miss Jacqueline Gates; three brothers, F.verette Gates, Hubert Gates and Clarence Gates. J.H. AUSTIN INSURANCE SINCE 1950 ,ay. AUTO - FIRE - LIFF * CASUALTY 114 W.
