Calhi Denise Miller, dauglrter of Mr.
and Mrs. James O. Miller celebrated her
tenth birthday last Thursday with a
party given by her mother in the
Trainable Class at J.W. McLauchlin
School. Mrs. Miller served the class cake,
ice cream and Pepsi.
Hoke Seniors
Try For Grant
Two Hoke High seniors have been
chosen to compete for the Sallie
Southal! Cotten scholarship of the
North Carolina Federation of Women's
Clubs.'
They are Susan Croft and Pam
Dockery.
The girls will be competing at the
district meeting at Campbell College on
March 1. One winner will be chosen to
vie in the state finals for the S1,250
scholarship given each year to an
outstanding girl graduate in the state.
The scholarship may be used at any
state-supported institution.
Nominees are chosen on the basis of
character, scholastic ability, intellectual
potential, leadership, school and
community activities and need for
financial assistance.
Susan and Pam were chosen by a
committee from the Raeford Woman's
Club and the Raeford Junior Woman's
Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Carson Davis Jr.. have
returned from Dallas. Texas where they
attended a meeting of the Home
Builders Association. Following the
meeting tltcy vacationed in Mexico.
Leroy Freeman and family of Raleigh
spent the weekend with his mother.
Mrs. A.J. Freeman. Sunday guests of
Mrs. Freeman were her son, AJ.
Freeman, Jr.. and family of Fayetteville,
and Iter son. Tommy, and family of Red
Springs.
The Education Department of the
Rael'ord Woman's Club met in the home
of Mrs. A.D. Core. Tuesday night.
Co-hostesses were Mrs. Charles Hosteller
and Mrs. Neil Senter.
Mrs. Steeva Snead, a very talented,
local, young woman, gave the program
on antique dolls. She presented several
of the dolls in her collection and their
histories. Doll books from her collection
were also on view for the members to
examine and enjoy during the social
hour.
Mrs. C.F.. Willis presided over the
business session, at which time activities
were endorsed for the remainder of the
year.
Susan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
A.L. Croft of Aberdeen. She has been
an active member of the chorus and
chorale at Hoke High. She is a member
of the French Club, the National Honor
?Society, SAF., Science Club, Senior Hall
of Fame, 4-H Club and the adult church
choir.
She was student member for the
district Teacher of the Year committee,
a delegate to the SAK convention in
Rocky Mount and a member of the N.C.
choral workshop. She attended the
Governor's School, was Sunday School
vice-president, county representative in
the state 4-H dress revue and church
delegate for the Baptist Associational
Youth.

Pam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Mack L. Dockery of Raelord. She has
been a member of the student council,
vice president of her freshman class,
president of her sophomore class,
secretary of the student body, student
advisor and a member of the junior and
senior executive board.
She is a member of the SAE, the
National Honor Society, Pep Club,
Science Club vice-president, French
Club, band and annual staff.
Pam was a nominee for the
Governor's School, is on the county
beautification committee, was chief
marshal at Hoke High in 1074.
participated in girls' track, volleyball
and basketball.
She is a senior Girl Scout, a member
of the Senior Hall of Fame. Student
Council exchange student, a volunteer
at the rest home and a church pianist.
