Thom a s - S m ith Vows Spoken February 8 Miss Linda Ann Smith became the bride of Vernice Lee Thomas in a two o'clock ceremqny Saturday, February 8, at the home of the bride's grandmother, Mrs. Maggie Smith. The Rev. Milton Williams officiated. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Davenport of Norfolk, Va., and Mr. Thomas is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas Jr. of Raeford. Maid of honor, Miss Ellen Denise Davenport, sister of the bride, wore a floor - length, pale mint green gown made with high waistline, short puffed sleeves and back sash. She carried a bouquet of carnations. The home was decorated with baskets filled with flowers in colors matching the attendant's attire and bouquet. Given in marriage by her stepfather, the bride wore a gown of nylon organza fashioned with lace - trimmed stand - up collar, and lace and organza ruffles edging the bibbed bodice, of the bishop sleeves cuffs, and hemline of the full skirt. A lace cap, trimmed with pear - . centered lace flowers, held her three - tiered nylon tulle veil, and she carried a bouquet of white carnations and baby's breath. The bridegroom's father served as best man. The mother of the bride was attired in a long sleeve, floor - length gown of green polyester knit and matching accessories. , Mrs. Maggie Smith, maternal grandmother of the bride, wore a long sleeve, mint green dress with matching green accessories. Reception Following the wedding oeremony, a reception was held at the Hoke Civic Center. The bridal couple greeted guests and Mrs. Maggie Smith said goodbyes. Mrs. Louise Allen and Mrs. Annie McGeachy, cousins of the bride, presided at the register. Mrs. Clara Davis and Miss Mamie Shaw served cake. Arts Dept Miss Smith and Mr. Thomas were honored at a bridal tea on February 1, al 6:00 p.m., in the Laurel Hill Baptist Church fellowship hall. Hostesses were Mils Mamie ShaW, Mrs. Clara Davis, Mrs. Buenna Melvin, Mrs. Myrtle McRae and Mrs. Beatrice Handon. Tables were decorated with arrangements of pink and red camellias, magnolia foliage and pink candles, on white, green and red cloths. Other special guests were Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Linzie Morrison and Mrs. Vinnie McAllister. Birthdays Diane Lynn Smith Diane Lynn Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Smith Jr., celebrated her fifth birthday February 1, with a party at the home of her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Todd of Conway, S.C. The 17 guests were served cake, cookies, chips and drinks. Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Foreman and Mrs. Marion Weeks of Elizabeth City, spent several days this week with Mrs. Foreman's sister, Mrs. J.B. McLeod,and Mr. McLeod. The Public Affairs Department met in the home of Mrs. Glenn Wood. Co-hosteases were Mrs. James tx Warner and Miss Carolina Parker. Guest speaker was CWO Laird P. Ashburn, a former Viet Nam P.O.W. now stationed at Ft. Bragg. He gave an interesting account of his personal feelings and actual treatment received while he was a prisoner of war. During the business session a report from the Woman's Club executive board was given by Mrs. Alfred K. Leach. Mrs. Jack Pope, chairman, suggested that members keep informed on the legislative issues and make personal contact or write members on public issues. A social hour was held following the meeting. Chaminode Club MetT The Chaminade Music Club of Raeford held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hoke Civic Center. Following a covered dish supper Mrs. David Warren, president, called the meeting to order. Special guests, Mrs. Suzanne Cameron Linder of Bennettsville, S.C. and Mrs. Lib Miller, also of Bennettsville, were recognized and welcomed. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cameron of Raeford, parents of Mrs. Linder were also recognized. Mrs. Warren also welcomed husbands and other guests of club members. Mrs. Ed Brown, program leader, gave a synopsis of "Come Thou Fount of The Arts Department met February 4 at the home of Mrs. Frank Baker with Mrs. Glenn Langdon co-hostess. During a brief business meeting, members were reminded of the District Arts Festival scheduled for March 1 in Dunn. The executive committee report was given. Mrs. Eugene Carter presented a timely program on art centered around the portraits of George Washington.
