Dannie McCollum, president of the West Hoke Volunteer Fire Department that is organizing now, called for men interested in fire protection for the area to attend classes on Tuesday and Thursday night at the fire station on Turnpike Road. " The department has recently completed work on their truck and has obtained equipment. The tanker frame was constructed by BiH McQuage to a cab purchased by the department. West Hoke was first organized in 1969 with Paul Harris as president. McCollum said they are expecting state approval soon. Workshop Set On Alterations A workshop for senior citizens on remodeling clothes will be held Feb. 20 in the kitchen of thy county office building. The class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be conducted by Mrs. Brenda Canady, associate home economics agent. Participants are asked to bring a light lunch and clothes that need altering. Farm Items By W. S. Young & Phil Ricks County Agricultural Agents A campaign is being started in North Carolina this year to knock out Mosaic in our tobacco crop. Growers must start the control system at the plant beds and this means now. The Mosaic virus is found in manufactured tobacco products, tobacco stalks, stems, leaves and roots of the preceding crop, horsenettle, tobacco scrap and burlap sheets used for marketing tobacco. The loss is around six million dollars each year. A leaflet giving all the information is available at the County Agents office. Some "No Smoking, Chewing or Dipping" signs are also available that can be posted around tobacco plant beds to remind employees that might be weeding or pulling tobacco plants. Let's stamp Mosaic out this year. A summary from 55 tobacco counties has been done on the 1974 crop about the disease control treatment usage. Growers appear to be selecting control treatments, varieties, chemicals and cropping systems, based on the major problems. The use of varieties with high resistance increased slightly. Chemical soil treatment usage increased by 9%. Cropping systems that involve continuous culture increased by 2.47c with a corresponding decrease in use of 2 ? year rotation. Few growers (reduction of 105r) followed the preventative control program for Blue Mold, Anthracnose and damping off. Many farmers are thinking about planting pickling cucumbers this spring. This is a crop that can provide some early income to families, if the job is done right. A new bulletin on production practices is available from the County Agents office. It goes into detail on good insect and disease control. Fertility of the crop is critical and nitrogen sidedressing is necessary.
