<~V[ew6 - Journal SECTION II ^mrmac m i0ii?jft - - a THURSDAY FFRRI UB V->n IRS Notes Early Filing Greensboro - More North Carolinians are filing their Federal income tax returns earlier this year than at this same point in 1974. During the first six weeks of this year's filing period,444,849 residents of the Tar Heel state had mailed in their returns. During the same period 29,119 returns were processed for refunds totalling almost $9 million, an average of $308 per refund. The average is about the same as last year. About eight percent of the individual returns filed have indicated one or more taxpayer errors. The most common errors are failure to sign the return and failure to complete the filing status and exemption blocks. Guy presided over Friday's session of District Court here for the first time, taking the place of Judge Joseph E. Dupree who was scheduled to be out of town. A McCain school bus driver accused of the theft of a S22I trumpet from an Aberdeen man waived a preliminary hearing on felony larceny. Ronnie McPhattcr. 16, P.O. Box 82, McCain, was bound over to the grand jury for indictment. Bond was continued. Leroy Smith. Shannon, was found not guilty of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill (ADW1TK) after a finding of no probable cause. James E. McNair. Lake Elizabeth Road, was cleared of ADW after a finding of no probable cause. Rickie N. Bratcher, 16. 707 Suanders St.. was cleared of felony charges of breaking and entering and larceny linked to a December breakin at a Saunders Street residence. No probable cause was found. Benjie A. Stephens, lb. of 520 F.. Sixth St., who was also named in the same breakin, was cleared after no probable cause was found. The state offered no evidence, saying that the city police determined that the two youths were not involved in the case. George R. Pittman, Jr., Rt. 2, Raeford, was found not guilty of possession of marijuana with intent to sell after a ruling of no probable cause. Rickie T. Horton, a Sandhills Youth Center inmate, pleaded guilty to escape and drew a scolding from Judge Guy, who told the youth he would have been due to be released soon with the time already served. A six month term was then tacked on the present sentence. Christine Henderson, Rt. 4, Red Springs, changed her plea from not CUiltV to eililtv miHujat/ toi petty larceny and was handed a suspended six month sentence and $100 fine. She was ordered to stay out of B.C. Moore's and Macks stores for two years. Dianne Headen, alias Sylvia Headen, Rt. 2, Raeford, pleaded not guilty but was found guilty of ADW and was given a suspended six month term and $50 fine. She was ordered not to associate with the prosecuting witnesses, John Alford and Richard Alford. ? Chuck Pickard, alias Charles E. Pickard, Raeford, pleaded guilty to the theft of a .15 caliber pistol and sentencing was continued for 90 days, to await results of a pre - sentence diagnostic study. Thomas McLaughlin, Jr., Shannon, pleaded guilty to public drunkenness and a thirty day term was suspended upon payment of court costs. Two defendants charged with driving under the influence (DU1) pleaded guilty to lesser offenses after the state dropped the drunken driving charges. Belton Day, Rt. 2, Raeford, pleaded guilty to careless and reckless driving, having no operator's license, and an inspection violation and was sentenced to six months, suspended upon $100 fine and court costs. Blood alcohol level was listed as .08, according to records. Jessie Hill, Jr., Ft. Bragg, pleaded guilty to speeding 65 in a 55 mph zone, and was fined $10 and costs. Hill's Breathalyzer reading as listed as .05, according to records. Declaring that he "had no patience with anyone who gives a worthless check". Judge Guy sentenced James A. Bratcher, of Raeford, to a suspended six month term and ordered him to make restitution of $59.84 to Faye's Grocery. Guy gave Bratcher one month to pay the money. John D. McRae, Rt. 1, Raeford, pleaded guilty to worthless check for $40 to Ritter Finance System and drew a six month suspended term and orders to make restitution by Feb. 28. Clarence Bratcher, Raeford, pleaded guilty to non ? support and a two year sentence was suspended on condition he pay $12.50 weekly support payments. Several persons pleaded guilty to various traffic offenses. They were: Gary A. Baldwin, 514 E. Sixth Ave., having no financial responsibility and displaying ficticious license plate, six month suspended sentence, $100 fine and costs; Darryl E. Cribb, Red Springs, improper muffler, $10 fine and costs; William A. Smith, Rt. 1, Raeford, speeding 68 in a 45 mph zone, court costs to be paid by March 3; Michael A. Graham, Rt. I, Raeford, improper equipment, fined court costs. Failing to appear when called and forfeiting bond were Clarence Parrish, Trenton, NJ? speeding 80 in a 55 mph zone, and Billy D. Locklear, Red Springs, shoplifting. Farm Items By W.S. Young & Phil Ricks County Agricultural Agents For the first time North Carolina certified cotton seed will have two standards effective as of Jan. 31. Growers should note this change and become familiar with the standards. They will be labeled Certified ? 1 and Certified ? 2. The same will apply to other seeds but it will come in effect July 1. You must examine the tag closely to determine what you are buying. The Certified ? 1 will have a germination of 80' r and the Certified - 2 will have 70'7. Only one cocklebur per pound of seed will be allowed in the Number 1 seed and two per pound will be allowed in the Number 3. Most other Southeastern States have lowered the Certified Germination Standard to 70'ft for cotton seed. Remember, read and understand the seed label. ? * * Insect surveys are being conducted throughout North Carolina all during the year. This fall one was done to check on the spread of the European Corn Borer. Five farms were checked in Hoke County and it was found that 807r of the plants checked were infested with the borer. This was the highest percentage in the state. Also the Southern Corn Stalk Borer was found in large numbers this year. Corn growers might need to plan to control program this next year with the infestation so high. * * * There will be an Egg and Soybean Referendum held in each county of North Carolina on Feb. 27. Any person that shares in the income from eggs or soybeans is eligible to vote. The soybean referendum is for a six year period and involves an assessment of one - half cent on each bushel of soybeans marketed. The egg referendum is for a three ? year period and involves a three - cent assessment per case of eggs. Polling places are to be set up at the following places: Hoke ASCS Office Agricultural Extension Office Dundarrach Trading Company D.R.
