From The Home Agent's Desk By Ellen Willis & Brenda Canady HINT: If you like to save those sparkly Christmas bows from your gift packages for use another time, pack each one separately in a Ziploc storage bag. quart size, or several together in the large gallon ? size Ziploc bag. Instead of carefully pressing all the air out as you would when packaging food items, slip in the bow, close the bag except for the last inch, then blow as much air in as possible. Seal the remaining zipper ? like closure securely but with a light touch. Since the seals are air - tight when closed properly, this will provide an excellent "cushion" against crushing until needed again. Packing in Ziploc bags in this manner is a good way to protect many other kinds of holiday items, too. You still may have enough space to grow strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, grapes and gooseberries according to the 1975 Yearbook oi Agriculture. For growing strawberries - you only need to space them I' apart in the row and cut off all runner plants so that only the original plants produce fruit. Blackberries need 4' to 6' spacing in the row. Red laspberries only 2' apart and purple and black raspberries 4' to 5' apart. Blueberries in time fill the row when spaced 5" apart. Grapes must have 8' to 10* in the row. Currants need 3* in the row and gooseberries 4*. Actually the rows need to be ft* to 7' apart for ail crops except strawberries, where I* suffices. On well grown mature plants your production might be from: 50 mature strawberry plants ? yield 25 pounds. 5 blackberry plants -yickl 25 pounds. 5 grape plants - about 50 pounds. Strawberry plants will bear a full crop a year alter planting - the others will bear only light crops until the plants are 2 to 3 years old. If you plan to grow some of these small fruit crops you should check with the County Extension Office for soil conditions in your community. Certain requirements are necessary ani.it does depend on the area of the country where you live.
