CP&L Offers Hints On Saving Electricity Conservation is the major weapon in the homeowner's right to lower electricity costs. Martha Bingman. customer service representative for Carolina Power and Light Company, provides some hints for saving electricity. In general, she explained, all electrical equipment is rated in watts. The higher the wattage, the more it will cost per hour to operate. Also, any equipment with a heating element, such as the stove, water heater or electrical space heaters, cost more to operate than garbage disposers and fans that do not have an element. Aside from electric heat, water heating is the largest consumer of power in the home. Miss Bingman said. Save by uang hot waicr only when necessary. Avoid using hot water for short periods, such as when washing your hands. Heated water left in the pipes will cool and be wasted. A five minute shower uses less water than a tub bath, she said. Shaving for five minutes with the hot water left running can waste as much as six gallons of hot water. Set your water heater thermostat at 130 degrees, she said, unless you have a dish washer. Then, 140 degrees will be satisfactory. In cooking, do not preheat heating elements and don't use the higher temperatures for the entire cooking period. Once food begins to boil, turn the element to medium or low. Plan oven meals, she advised. The oven takes less energy because it cycles on and off whereas surface units are on for the entire cooking period. But no oven peeping; you'll lose 20 per cent of the heat each time the door is opened. In operating the refrigerator and freezer, limit door openings as much as possible and make sure the gaskets are tight. Defrost before ice gets one-fourth inch thick and locate the appliances away from sources of heat like the stove. Most of the operating cost of a washer comes from the heated water. Use cold water as much as possible and wash full loads. A dryer costs about 13 cents an hour to operate, Miss Bingman estimated. She suggested using full loads and hanging clothes outside to dry on sunny days. Cleaning the filter after each use and venting moisture to the outside correctly are important, she said. Aside from the do tires dryer, the ? BIDS? That will be continued this year, McAllister said, as will the community service program. This program covers such things at providing clothing for children who might not otherwise be able to attend school. dishwasher is possibly the number one luxury appliance, Miss Bingman said. However, this does not mean it is an energy hog. In fact, many times one full dishwasher load a day will use less hot water than hand washing, she said. She recommended always doing full loads and turning off the drying cycle to let dishes dry with the door ajar. When dishwashing by hand, she recommends washing in hot water and rinsing with cold. Electric heal is the major use of power in the home, Miss Bingman said. She recommended keeping the thermostat at 68-69 constantly. However, if no one is at home during the day, the heat should be turned to the lowest setting she said. Do not, however, turn the thermostat to a high temperature to heat the home quickly, as this gets the room too warm to fast and is hard to cool down, she said. Clean or change filters monthly, she adviscd. And make sure that fireplace dampers are closed when the fireplace is not being used. Color television cost about 75 per cent more to operate than black and white, she said. The instant-on sets always draw electricity, even when not turned on, and therefore should be unplugged when not in use, she recommended. Some instant on sets have a switch on the back panel to turn the set completely off. Miss Bingman advised. She included estimates of the average cost of operation for appliances based on Oct. 15 costs, but cautioned that the fuel adjustment charges cause the actual operating costs to vary somewhat. 1. TFN .There is a story about a father who took his children to the circus. There, for the first time they saw an elephant. When they got home their mother questioned them about what they had seen. All the children wanted to tell her about the strange beast they had seen: the elephant! "What did he look like?" the mother wanted to know. Little Johnny, who had looked at the elephant from one side of the cage and seen only the face of the beast, described the elephant in terms of the long, grey trunk that lifted food to his small mouth. Lucy, who had viewed the elephant from the side, described the hugh mammal in terms of his enormous body. Bobby, however, who had seen the elephant only from the rear, was fascinated by the hugh, thin, flapping ears. "Why," said mother mischievously, "1 have a hard time picturing him from your different descriptions." At that, Ellen, who had not yet been heard from, handed her mother a polaroid photograph she had taken of the elephant: "Maybe this will help you. Mother." The story is a parable of man's attempts to define and describe their experience with the Divine dimension of life: the reality we call God. It is not that some views of the Divine are wrong, but that they are incomplete, only part of the picture. Each approach reflects God's attempt to reveal himself to men. He has always used a variety of methods and means. The writer of Hebrews acknowledges this when he says: "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets..." (Hebrews 1:1). There has never been just one way by which God reveals himself to man. These ways are often so diverse so as to seem contradictory and incompatible. But they are not: it is man's limited, partial vision that creates the conflicts. Man has a finite mind and whenever he attempts to comprehend the infinite he is forced to admit defeat. "In many and various ways," God has spoken to us over the centuries. He has spoken to us through all kinds of religions and religious leaders. He has spoken to us through men who did not even know that God was using them. Each of these pictures has helped us to better understand the nature of God, yet the composite picture is always incomplete at best. This is what we find to be the uniqueness of Jesus Christ: what we find partially in others, we find completely in him. The writer of Hebrews says it this way: "but in these last days he has spoke to us by a Son..." (Hebrews 1:2). The Christ does for us what Ellen's polaroid photo did for her mother in the story. The writer of Hebrews says: "He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature..." (1:3). In Christ we see the clearest of all reflections of God. It is the best likeness of God available to man. To view Christ may not dispel all the Divine mysteries, but in him we find a sufficient likeness so that the major questions of life may be answered. God has spoken many times to man and in many different ways and we must respect what others have heard him say. Yet, those who follow Christ will humbly believe that in him God has spoken his ultimate word.
