SOUTH HOKE HLAZE-Thv home of Mr. and Mn. Harvey MacGregor was engulfed in flames when the fire trucks arrived
Thursday morning. The house was gutted.
Blaze Guts Family Home
Twelve persons escaped without
injury from a house about two miles
east of South Hoke School Thursday
morning when a fire raged out of
control.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey
MacGregor was termed a total loss,
according to North Raeford Fire
Department Chief George Baker. All of
the family's belongings were destroyed
and they got out with only the clothes
they were wearing, he said.
The five room cinderblock house was
engulfed in flames when the firemen
arrived and the roof collapsed within
minutes. The Stonewall Fire
Department was called to assist and
brought their water truck.
Baker said Mrs. MacGregor. who was
asleep, and 11 children were in the
house when the fire broke out. Mrs.
MacGregor's husband had left for his
job at McCain Sanitorium early in the
morning.
Distraught, the woman was not able
to immediately determine if all 11
children were out of the burning house
safely, he said. All were found in the
yard unharmed, some of them crying.
Cause of the blaze has not he?n
determined. Baker said it appears to
have started in a rear bedroom.

Chemical control of some wheal
diseases may pay at present wheat prices
if conditions favor serious infections. A
potential yield of 40 to 00 bushels per
acre should support the cost of
treatment. The leaf blotches give the
most trouble if the weather is cool and
wet for long periods of time. The first
application should he made when about
257r of the heads have emerged from
the boot. A second application should
be made in nine to ten days for best
results. Tithane M-45 or Manzate 200
are recommended at one and one half to
two pounds per acre with a spreader
sticker By air. live gallons of water will
give good coverage.
Oil March lb. cattle growers will have
to certify again in writing that cattle
and sheep marketed for slaughter have
been withdrawn from DES for 14 days
or never received Ihe material. A
specific form must be completed and
signed by the producer.
A number of products called "soil
activities" ? are being marketed, their
purpose being lo inoculate the soil with
new beneficial microorganisms or to
activate those which are already present
in the soil. These products have been
tested extensively at eight southern
states research stations. These tests have
shown that they contain negligible
amounts of plant nutrients. Number of
microorganisms present were too low to
be considered as soil or plant inoculants.
There was no indication that yields were
significanlly increased under the
different soil and climate conditions.
There was no delayed benefits in
successive crops.
