Patrol Busy At Wrecks A Raeford man is in the intensive care unit at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville following a high speed wreck Saturday afternoon on the old Carthage Road off Highway 211. Trooper K.W. Coen said Lewis Fletcher Oldhain, 28, Roberts St., Raeford, apparently lost control of his 1971 Chevrolet on a curve while traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle overturned several times, Coen said, and Oldham was thrown from the car. Oldhain was taken by ambulance to Southeastern General Hospital in Lumber ton and later transferred to Cape Fear Valley Hospital. A spokesman said Tuesday Oldham was in the intensive care unit, but the extent of his injuries was not disclosed. A passenger, Roger Allen Oldham, 20. of Shannon, was slightly injured in the crash and treated and released from Southeastern General Hospital. Coen said the occupants were not using seat belts. He termed the car a total loss. Saturday night, a Lumber Bridge woman struck a bridge while driving in heavy rain about 10:30 near McNeill's Lake,Coen also reported. Margaret Locklear, Rt. I, Lumber Bridge, apparently crossed the center of the bridge and collided with the railing, tearing it away, he said. Her car, a 1966 Chrysler, was suspended on the edge of the bridge, and Mrs. Locklear and six children also in the car crawled to safety out the right side of the vehicle. Mrs. Locklear was transported to Southeastern General Hospital with facial lacerations. It was not known if she was admitted. Coen estimated the damage to the car at $700. Mrs. Locklear was charged with driving left of center. A 12 - year - old girl has been released from Cape Fear Valley Hospital after treatment for injuries sustained Feb. 26 when she ran into the path of a truck, Coen said. Pamla Lynette McRae, Rt. 1, Raeford. was standing on the shoulder of Airport Road about 4:30 p.m. in the Tyler Town section and had looked both ways for traffic, according to a witness. The girl was facing the opposite way the truck was approaching, Coen said, and ran into the side of the truck when she dashed onto the highway. The driver, Charles E. Smith, 29, of Hope Mills, was not charged, Coen said. Smith was driving a United Parcel Service vehicle. Pamla was taken by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with head injuries, Coen said.
