In The Event of Later Adjournment, Notice To That Effect Will Be Published In This Newspaper. | HOKECOUNTY I Board of Commissioners a spectacular eaten in tne etgntn inning by Pembroke third baseman Tommy Sampson left two men on base and squashed Hoke's last chance to win in the second game of the season at Hoke High Friday. The Warriors broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth to pull ahead. With one man out, Beatty Lowery drew a walk from Buck's pitcher David McNeill, then went to second on a wild pitch. Lowery scored the game winning run on a single to left field by Kenny Deese. Hoke put to men on base in the bottom of the inning to challenge Pembroke. With two men out and runners on base, McNeill hit an almost unreachable high foul that was snared by Sampson's desperate grab. Bucks' coach Terry Grier blamed the loss on poor hitting and too many errors. "1 was disappointed in our outfield play," he said Monday. "We had a number of outfield mistakes by seasoned players who shouldn't have made them. "And we've got to start hitting the ball." Hoke left runners on base at several key points during the game, Grier said, as ten Bucks struck out. Eight of the strikeouts came with men on base. Pembroke's Deese hit the second pitch of the game for a double, as Eddie Ramsey started the game on the mound for the Bucks. Chris Locklear sent Deese in to score on a single, and soon after, Locklear scored on a second error. The inning ended with the bases loaded as Jim Lowery fouled out to catcher Noah Hendrix. With one man out, Hoke's first baseman, Allen Thomas, doubled to deep left center and Hendrix got on base on an error by the Pembroke third baseman. A single by left fielder Curtis Jones sent Thomas home and Hendrix scored on a single by center fielder Donnie Monroe to tie the game. With runners on second and third base, the next two Hoke batters were called out on strikes. In the second inning, Ramsey gave up two walks and both men then scored on errors in the outfield, to put the Warriors ahead 4-2. In the Bucks' half of the inning, right fielder Mike Allen went to first after being hit by a pitch and scored on a hit by Thomas. Again, Bucks were left on second and third as Pembroke's pitcher, Locklear, retired the side. David McNeill relieved Ramsey on the mound to start the third inning and struck out nine batters while allowing only one hit and one unearned run for the remainder of the game. Neither side scored until the bottom of the fifth, when Thomas beat the throw to first to get on base, then went to second on a sacrifice by Hendrix. Elvis Buie, pinch-hitting for Curtis Jones, singled Thomas home to tie the score. Both teams were held scoreless for the next two innings but Pembroke collected the needed run in the top of the eighth. Going over the game later, Grier praised McNeill's pitching and Thomas' hitting. And he drew attention to the tough pre-conference competition. Hallsboro, who drew a tie in the opening game was last years 2-A champion and Richmond County, scheduled this week, is defending 4-A titleholder, Grier explained. "I feel like when we start really hitting the baseball, that instead of just playing everyone such a close game, well start winning some ball games." Grier said.
