THEY PA VED PARADISE. . .and put in a parking lot. go the words of a song popular a couple of years ago. It may not have been Paradise, but the dogwood trees at Raeford Elementary, planted about 1938, fell Monday to make way for more parking. The move was essential, according to Raz Autry, to accommodate more bus space next year. The oak trees in the lot were saved from destruction partly by vehement protests of principal J. W. Turlington. Housing Hoke Families Major Interest Says Clark "We have many families in Hoke County that deserve and qualify for a home of their own," William Clark, county director of Farmers Home Administration, said. "These families have worked long and hard and need a home and want a home that they can call their own." "Farmers Home Administration is here to help these families achieve tlteir goal when other financing is not available," he said. A family with an adjusted income of not more than SI 1,500.00 may qualify if they do not already own a safe and sanitary house, he explained. For the family whose income is in the lower income bracket, this family may still qualify for a housing loan with assistance available from the Government. This assistance is based 011 the amount of income and the number of minor children in the family. Farmers Home Administration provides financing for many types of loans, however, homes for the people of ?COURSES? Continued from page I a move that will increase scheduling flexibility, lidwardsexplained. A cooperative office occupations class, new this year lor seniors, will place students in office jobs, lidwards said. It is similar to the L)E and ICT courses now offered. Several other classes are being added for grades 10-12 as part of the college preparation program, these include advanced composition, journalism for newspaper, journalism for annuals and literary magazine.drama. French III and Spanish III. A school newspaper is planned next year in conjunction with the journalism classes. Edwards said, and a musical drama is being considered for presentation next spring, with the chorus, hand and drama classes. Incoming freshmen will also have a wider selection of classes from which to choose. In addition to basic courses, ninth graders will be able to lake French or Spanish, world geography, adaptive physical education or general industries. A new math course with algebra will be taught to allow students to progress at a slower pace, if necessary. Also returning to the curriculum after being dropped several years ago is ? introduction to agriculture. "This was deleted in the past," Edwards explained, "but we feel there is a place for it again." "We're making tremendous changes ? in the vocational department." Edwards said. "We're trying to make the courses more sequential. In the past, they could be taken in more of a hit or miss fashion but making them sequential will aid in skill building." Second level classes will be added in bricklaying, carpentry, electronics, auto mechanics and drafting. A third year is being added to the industrial cooperative training and to health occupations course, which will include actual job experience. A second year is being added to ornamental horticulture and two new agriculture classes, agriculture machines and agriculture construction, will be taught for the first time next year. The home economics program will be composed of one year of intruductory home ec followed the next years by specialization in areas such as clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, .clothing services and home furnishing "services and health and management services. Two family life courses will be i offered next year. They are child ^development and interpersonal Kfelalionships. Pre-registration began last week for I incoming seniors and will continue for I the next f >ur weeks Hoke County are one of the major interest at this time, Clark said. FmHA houses are designed to house a family with the comforts of a modem living. Some house plans can be obtained without charge from the N.C. Agriculture Extension Service. Applications for a housing loan may be obtained from the local office in the Post Office Building. The interest rate is now 8 1/8% and financing is available for a period of thirty ? three years. We are here to serve the family that needs and deserves help through better living conditions," Clark said. "FmHA is for you." Service Personnel Airman Milfred C. Robinson, grandson of Mrs. Nettie J. By 11 a.m. Monday, the signs were in place and by 11:05 the first motorist had already broken the law. No traffic tickets were issued the first day, as police stopped cars and ordered drivers to turn around. The man who had campaigned, first as a private citizen and then on the city council, for the one-way street, viewed the installation of the signs with satisfaction. "It will be all right once people get used to it," Sam Morris said. He drove several extra blocks to lunch because of the change, and Tuesday morning, had to go even further out of his way to get to work. Few drivers Monday trusted their fellow motorists enough to venture into the left lane, so traffic proceeded singlefile for the most part. Those who did use the left lane often found motorists to their right attempting to turn left on to Main Street. The state is scheduled to paint lane markings on the streets as soon as the equipment is repaired. Up the street, a police whistle shrilled and Wiggins watched an officer bar a car from entering Elwood from Main Street. "We've got big signs up all over the place," he sighed. Just then a car pulled out from an alley, headed the wrong way, and Wiggins went out to intercept the driver. For Color TV Service Call 875-2578 No Ans. 875-2365 One day service in most cases.
