S. Young & Phil Ricks County Agricultural Agents Velvetleaf, an annual broadleaf weed, is becoming more prevalent in our fields in the state. It has short, velvety hairs on the stem and leaf. The leaves are broadly heart-shaped and tapered at the tip. A combination of herbicides and timely cultivations are effective in controlling the weeds. No pre-emergence herbicides offer outstanding control. In corn, Aatrex is perhaps the best when the weeds are small. 2,4-D gives some control. In soybeans, Lorox and Lexone or Senear give some control. Dinoseb and Basagran offers some control. If you have this problem, then you must make definite plans to stop its growth. Dogwood Spot Anthracnose will be showing up in the next several weeks. It is time to put on the first fungicide spray for control. Materials to use are Captan, Maneb. Mancozeb and Folpet 50. Usually about four sprays each year will control the disease. Home owners should be on the lookout for Fusiform rust in loblolly and slash pines. You should look for elongated swollen galls on the trunk or branches. Bright orange, powdery spores mass on the surface of tree in the early spring. Disease will girdle and kill the tree or branch sometimes. They will break easily from wind damage. There is no chemical control and removal of the infected trees is recommended. A summary has been made of the 39 N.C. tobacco farms on the data processing program at N.C. State University. Operating expenses and depreciation on the farms averaged 72c per pound. With 1974 prices averaging SI.04 per pound, this left a margin of $.32 per pound to compensate the owner - operator for his own time and investment. The cost cited above does not include labor and management performed by the grower or any charges for his own quota, land or interest on his own investment. Rough indications are that increased tobacco costs almost offset higher leaf prices in 1974. WEIGH LESS OR PAY NOTHING Start losing weight today OR MONEY BACK.
