Family Feud Brings Not Guilty Ruling
A 28-year-old Aberdeen man was
advised to "head for the county line"
after he was found not guilty of charges
stemming from a long standing family
disagreement Friday.
Thomas L. Mims, Rt. 1. Aberdeen,
had been accused of trespass, assault by
pointing a gun, and larceny of a gun in
connection with a March 1 fracas with
his brother, Edward A. Mims. 23, also
of Rt. I.
Edward Mims was found not guilty of
assault with a deadly weapon (ADW)
related to a Feb. 28 family quarrel.
After lengthy and much conflicting
testimony, Judge Joseph E. Dupree
pronounced both men not guilty and
Thomas Mims was hurriedly escorted
out of the courtroom by Deputy Harvey
Young and attorney Mary Ann Tally.
After a brief conference with Sheriff
D.M. Barrington. Mims was heard to
state his intention was to get out of the
county and avoid any incident.
In other action, a Rt 2 woman
charged with two counts of passing
forged government checks, pleaded
guilty to two counts of unauthorized
opening of sealed letter. Maggie B.
Monroe, 34, was handed an 18-month
term, suspended for two years, placed
on probation two years, ordered to
make restitution for $300 and fined
costs.
Terry Maxwell. 913 Stephens St..
pleaded guilty to petty larceny and was
given a 12-monlh term, suspended for
3)6 years, put on probation 314 years
and ordered to make restitution for
$75. Maxwell was also ordered to attend
school or be employed as a condition of
his sentence. A second charge of petty
larceny was not prosecuted.
James Murphy. RED, Shannon,
waived a preliminary hearing on a
breaking and entering charge and will
face indictment by the grand jury. Bond
was continued at $ 1,000.
Bertha L McLean. Rt. I, pleaded
guilty to shoplifting and the result was a
six-month term suspended for five
years. $25 fine, and orders not to be
convicted of shoplifting or larceny for
the next five years.
A number of persons pleaded guilty
to drunken driving (DUI) and one
defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser
charge after DUI was dropped.
Pleading guilty to reckless driving and
speeding 65 in a 55 mph zone was
Lames Smith. Fayetteville, sixty days
suspended upon payment of $100 fine
and' costs, (Breathalyzer refused,
according to records).
Pleading guilty to DUI were Ethel Q.
McLean, Laurinhurg. (driving left of
center not prosecuted) six months
suspended for two years, ordered to
surrender license. $150 fine and costs.
Breathalyzer result was .17. according
to records; Scilous Junior Love. Rt. I,
DUI (third offense) and driving while
license revoked, two years suspended
for five years, placed on probation five
years, ordered not to drive until
licensed, and $1,000 fine and costs.
Breathalyzer result was .23. according
to records.
Also pleading guilty to DUI were
Marl Locklear. Rt. I. Red Springs, six
months suspended for two years, placed
on probation two years, ordered not to
drive for one year, fined $250 and costs.
Breathalyzer reading is listed as .32.

Fund Drive
Kay Thomas and Willie McCaskill
were named co-chairman of a fund
raising campaign being mounted by the
Hoke County Young Democrats Club.
The YDC, in a meeting recently at the
courthouse, also approved a resolution
supporting public housing and began
efforts to improve medical care in the
county.
Tom Burgess is scheduled to report at
the next meeting on medical care in the
county and ways to improve it,
president Warren Pate said.
A voter registration drive is also being
considered. Pate said.
A series of speakers are scheduled for
the next several meetings. Sam Morris,
county Democratic chairman, will speak
at the next YDC meeting planned for
April 10 at the courthouse.
4-H Corner
Rising high school juniors and seniors
will have an opportunity to learn ahout
marine science, ecology of the coastal
region and career opportunities at lour
summer workshops.
The dates of the workshops are: June
22-28: June 2'>-July 5; July 20-26; and
July 27-August 2.
The workshops will he held at the
Harbor House Marine Science Center at
Wrightsville Beach.
The programs include lectures, films,
discussions and field trips io coastal
areas and marine science laboratories.
The workshops are sponsored by the
4-H organization, but attendance is not
limited to 4-H members. However,
students must have the endorsement of
their science teacher or principal and
county extension agent. Persons who
have attended previous marine science
workshops are not eligible.

students. The cost of the workshops,
including meals, lodging and field trips,
is SI 15. Participants must arrange their
own transportation.

result was a PJC for two years and
probation ordered for two years. She
was fined costs.
Lacy Morrisey, 513 E. Prospect St.,
pleaded guilty to simple assault and was
given a PJC for two years and orders to
meet costs.
Huddell Hammonds, Red Springs,
was found not guilty of assault on a
female and the prosecuting witness was
ordered to pay costs.
Five defendants pleaded guilty to
various driving offenses. They were:
Charles E. Cameron, no address
available, speeding 66 in a 55 mph zone.
$10 fine and costs; Calvin McLean, Red
Springs, having no license, 30 days
suspended, $25 fine and costs; James T.
Gamer, Asheboro, 68 in a 55 mph zone,
PJC upon payment of costs; Mary H.
Shaw, 514 Grant Ave., fictitious license
plate and no financial responsibility,six
months, suspended for three years. $25
fine and ordered not to violate any
motor vehicle laws.
Failing to appear and forfeiting bond
was Ronald G. Truesdale, Sumter, S.C..
for speeding 80 in a 55 mph zone.
Cases not prosecuted with leave were
Commie Wall. Raeford. trespass.
Eugene Campbell, E. Edinborough
Ave., was not prosecuted on a charge of
public drunkenness.
