Attack On Hogs Is Investigated
An attack on two hogs was
investigated last week by Hoke County
deputies.
Sam Galberth, of Box 485, Raeford,
reported that two of his hogs penned
across the road from his residence were
injured sometime between 3 p.m.,
March 31 and noon of April 1.
According to the deputy's report, the
two hogs were "cut all over their
bodies." No arrestshave been made.
Two thefts occurring on April I were
reported:
Bobby Wright of Rt. I, Raeford.
reported the theft of 17 bags of tobacco
fertilizer stolen from a pack house on
the W.A. Wright farm.
Two men were arrested later that
week and charged with breaking,
entering, larceny and receiving in
connection with die theft.
Charged were Larry McRae, 23, and
John Hopkin, Jr., 23.
A guitar was reported stolen from the
Hillcresl home of F.d McNeill.
Mrs. Leonard Ransom of Rt. 2, the
Arabia-Dundarrach Road, reported her
home was broken into between 2-3:45
p.m. Saturday. A tape player, .22
calibre rifle,electric guitar and amplifier
valued at S280 were reported stolen.
A 20-gauge single-shot shotgun was
reported stolen during the day Saturday
from the home of Leon Locklear of
Arabia Road.
Granford Woods of Rt. I. Lumber
Bridge, reported the theft Monday of 28
bags of hog Iced from a storage house
near his home.
The city police reported no incidents
during the week.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Peterkin, Route
Red Springs, completed a clerk course
at the Army Adjutant General School

He received instruction in typing,
unit mail service, morning reports.

Army Sgt. Gerald It. Barbour Jr.,
whose parents live on Route 2, Raeford,
was presented the Good Conduct Medal
here.

who distinguish themselves from among
their fellow military personnel through
exemplary conduct, efficiency and
fidelity during their active military
service.
Sgt. Barbour received the award while
assigned as a motor sergeant with the
8th Infantry Division.

Supt. Raz Autry might be able to give
high school principals across the state
some good lessons on how to have
discipline. Raz was noted for his talent
as a disciplinary piincipal before moving
up to county superintendent.

programs we would like to see every
needy person, particularly the aged, the
crippled, the blind and others unable to
work provided for amply, and this we
are able to do. But to nave government
workers trying to roundup more and
more for the Food Stamp program, will
in our opinion bring in too many who
are able to provide for themselves,
which is already bringing the program
into ill-repute.
A reasonable amount of pride is
essential to good citizenship. Back in
the Great Depression of the 1930'smy
family could well have accepted some of
the small hand-outs that were made
available in the early New Deal Days.
But we did not take anything in the way
of a "hand-out," not that we could not
have used it, for as boys just out of high
school with our Dad coming down with
paralysis, money was almost like Old
Mother Hubbard's cupboard, but we
never missed a meal and I think we were
much better prepared to face the
challenges of life by doing for ourselves
what today government is doing for so
many.
SAD - It's sad to see old friends like
Governor John B. Connally of Texas
and Jake Jacobaen set against each other
in court accusing each other of lying!
Pvt. Christopher Smith, 20. son ot
James Smith. Route I. Raefoid,
received a Parachutist Radge marking his
successful completion of the airborne
course at the Aimy Infantry School
here.
He underwent a rigorous physical
training program, then tested his ability
by jumping 24-foot and 250-foot
towers. The first week he was required
to make-live actual jumps.
Pfc. James Chambers Jr.. whose
parents live on Route I, Aberdeen, is
assigned as a tank crewman with the 1st
Infantry Division here.

Seaman Bobby Hunt, son of Mrs.
Pearlcne L. Hunt of Route 4, Red
Springs, has arrived in the
Mediterranean aboard die dock landing
ship USS Pensacola, which is
homeported at Little Creek, Va.
He will participate in operational
readiness training exercises as part of
die U.S. Sixth fleet, and visit several
Mediterranean countries.

open and search any locker at any time,
and the contents of the locker, oilier
than assigned school books and
materials, may be retained by the school
officials, or, if appropriate delivered to
law enforcement officials; and the
contents of the locker may be used as
evidence by school officials in any
disciplinary proceedings brought against
the student by the school Principal,
Superintendent of Schools, Board of
Hducation, and/or used in any court
proceedings.
4. Tlie student will leave with die

of the locker assigned to him, or a key
which will open the lock on the locker
before the assignment of a locker
becomes effective. If the student
changes the lock on his locker, it must
bo with the permission of die Principal,
at which time the student shall list the
new combination of his locker with the
Principal, or leave a new key with the
Principal, in default of which the school
Principal, Superintendent of Schools, or
Board of Hducation is authori/.cd to
break the lock, open and enter the
locker if a search of lockers, or ihis
locker, is conducted.
Any violation of die rules regarding
locker assignment will result in the
termination of the privilege of the
locker.
Corporal Punishment
The Hoke County Board of
Hducation believes that a teacher must
have discipline before teaching and
learning can take place. Therefore, each
teacher is required to maintain order
through a variety of methods. Should
corporal punishment be deemed
necessary it will be administered in the
presence of the principal or if he is
absent from the school in the presence
of his designee. All such punishment
shall he in compliance with North
Carolina General Statute 115-146.
Teaching In Field
With the full realization that the
teachers sei the method of instruction
in their individual classroom, only
properly certified individuals will be
considered for employment. All
teachers now teaching in areas other
than their field will be required to show
progress (six hours) each year toward
getting properly certified in the area of
their current teaching assignment. Any
individual currently teaching out of
field will be automatically considered
for openings in their field as they
develop.
