Rain Stymies Growers County Agent Wendell Young said Tuesday the heavy tainfall in past weeks may be creating difficulties for tobacco growers. A total of 20 inches of rain, including 6.6 inches in March, has fallen in the county since the first of the year. "The rain has affected their ability to get into the land and work it". Young said. "I'd say most of them are behind". Young said tobacco is normally set around April 20 and a great deal of preparation must be finished first. "Tobacco is critical because of the 14-day waiting period after fumigation," he said. "If we get another big rain before the weekend, we might be in trouble with preparation." Young explained some farmers, particularly in areas with heavier types soil, have gotten their tractors stuck. "There's been so much rain the land hasn't had time to dry out." he said. "It'll rain again." Young said he is not concerned as yet about a delay in plantng which could affect future yield. "I think they'll get it done (in time) if they can get into die fields," he said. Young could recall only one or two seasons in the past 13 years when extremes of cool, wet weather delayed planting. Most of the growers have more modern machinery and the actual process of preparing the land doesn't take a great deal of time, he said. The agent said only about 1 "A or 2V of the corn has been planted and cotton planting will not start until the end of April or beginning of May. Young predicted cotton acreage will be about half of what it was a year ago. "It'll be going into soybeans and pickled cucumbers," he said. Scouts Donate Zoo Chimps April 19th is "Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Day" at the N.C. State Zoo in Asheboro. Over 500 girls from the 20-county council will participate in the presentation of SI,400 for the purchase of a pair of chimpanzees, plus an additional $800 which will be contributed to the zoo building fund. The girls raised money for this project by bake sales, glass and aluminum for recycling, zoo cirnivals, gift wrapping, magic shows, paper drives, bazaars, garage sales, andicookie sales. A chimp-naming contest was won by Durham troop No. 124. "Chitter" and "Chatter" are the names selected. Mrs. Steven Thomas announced the deadline for all Scouts planning to attend is this Friday. Interested girls should contact Mrs. Thomas at 875-4820 to reserve a seat on the bus.
