S.C.S. Activities
F. 0. Clark, District Conservationist
A new booklet showing good and bad
practices on construction sites and other
earth ? disturbing activities has been
published and is.now available through
Soil Conservation Service offices in
North Carolina, it was disclosed today
by State Conservationist Jesse L. Hicks
of Raleigh.
The booklet is entitled
"Knvironmental Do's and Don'ts on
Construction Sites." Aimed primarily at
contractors and public officials who
deal with control of erosion and
sedimentation, it consists mainly of
sketches illustrating favorable and
unfavorable practices.
"This publication will be useful
information for heavy equipment
operators and others, even though it is
rather simplified in its apprach. It can
serve as a companion publication to our
more detailed book on engineering
practices, the Guide for Sediment
Control on Construction Sites in North
Carolina," Jesse Hicks commented.
Some of the recommended practices
illustrated include preservation of
vegetation, use of sediment basins, use
of mulch or hydroseeding, preservation
of trees in rural areas, property
protection and screening of areas where
earth-disturbing activities are carried
out.
"A limited number of copies of this
useful book-Miscellaneous Publication
1291, Soil Conservation Service, U.S.
Department of Agriculture ~ have been
provided to SCS offices and local soil
and water conservation districts," Mr.
Hicks said. "We will be glad to provide
free copies to those needing them. The
Book can also be ordered from the
Superintendent of Documents, U.S.
Government Printing Office,
Washington, D.C. 20402, for 65 cents a
copy.",

Lo. I am with you alway. even unto
the end of the world. (Matthew 28:20)
Jenny King sold flowers. She had her
stand at the heart of a busy junction in
Belfast. Though she was a simple
woman, dressed in the style of the day
and with a shoulder shawl, she became
famous. She had been painted by a
famous painter, and her flowers had
been received by royalty.
It was her simple philosophy of life
that I remember best. One day in the
midst of the city's rush, I stopped by
for a chat. One of her family was soon
to leave for Australia. "Ah, well," she
replied, "it's the same God there as we
have here. It's a low bush that the sun
never shines on, and he's bad that can't
mend."
In her simple philosophy, she had
summed up the whole gospel and given
me three great truths of our religion
?God's presence everywhere
*God's providence and His care for
everybody
?the evangel of Christ, whose
redemption is fully offered to
everybody.
PRAYER: 0 God, our Father, help
us this day to know Thou art with us
and with all whom we love everywhere.
We pray that the redeeming power and
love of Christ may find welcome,In the
hearts of ill persons. In his name.
Amen.
THE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
God is never far away, but He ii always
closer when we pray.
