Young & Phil Ricks, County Agricultural Agents Some things that you should be on the lookout for around your home now. Southern pine beetles in your pine trees. Sap will be running out of the trees or you will see small holes where beetles have come out. Ticks on small children. Seven cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever have already been reported in North Carolina this year. Powdery mildew is on many types of plants. It usually shows up as a white powder on the leaves. Benlate is one of the control chemicals. White flies get on the new growth of many plants. They leave a sticky material on the plant and sooty mole will develop later. Malathion will give good control. This winter has been mild and there are plenty of insects on plants early in the season. Before applying any type of pesticide, your sprayer needs to be calibrated. You need to know the exact I amount the sprayer is placing on your field. Also the nozzle tips should be checked to see if they are worn or if they are spraying equal amounts. A leaflet recently published on the methods to use in calibrating equipment can be helpful to you. It is available at the agent's office. Be sure you are correct by checking your equipment. The proper weed control in each of our major crops is one of the limiting factors for good yields. This is especially true in our soybean crop. The increase of four to five bushels per acre on all of our acreage could mean more profit to growers. Our biggest problem is control from the time the soybeans come up. Weeds get in the row and are never controlled. Growers should make an effort to know more about the different weed control chemicals and know how to apply them correctly.
