The Governor's School of North Carolina has been established to provide a program of education especially for gifted and talented high school students. This is recognition of the students abilities and excellent training they have received from their parents, teachers and others. Joyce has been very active at Hoke High, with membership in N H S, the basketball team, and F C A. She also is active in church and community activities. Joyce is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Star athlete Kathy McMillan broke the sectional records in two events. The 17-year-old junior recorded a 20' 3V4" leap in the long jump, and also set a record in the 220-yard dash with a time of 25.1. The Hoke girls collected 36 points in the meet, far ahead of second place Lejeune with 22. Nineteen other teams finished with scores out of about forty who competed. Mitchell Baker, George Miller Shine At Upchurch Meet Mitchell Baker and George Miller were the two top trackmen in the sixth grade intramural track meet held at Upchurch last week. Baker won the triple jump, 100 - yard dash and anchored the mile relay team to victory. Miller was on the winning 880 - yard relay team and won the 880 yard run. In a vety close meet, fourth period won by one point in the very last event. The final score was fourth period, 45; fifth period,44 and first period, 31. The City of Raeford held down the second spot this week by turning back Hollingsworth four games. Oakwood is third this week as they trimmed Marks' three games to one. WSBH remains in the thick of things by beating Moore's four games. McNeil's picked up four wins from Kcrmit's Barbecue. Bill Hendrix for Marks' had the high 200 last week with 224. Mackie Carter for Oakwood had the High series with a 600 and a 221 game. Hoke Students Enter Show Two Raeford students at Robeson Technical Institute competed this week in a hairstyling contest at the school. The show was presented to the public Tuesday night. Ivone Gay of Raeford was the model for styling student Marilyn Thomas of Raeford. Some 30 cosmetology students competed. Summer Term Coming Up Sandhills Community College will have a full summer session of daytime and evening classes. Registration for evening classes. May 27. Registration of daytime classes will be May 28. Classes will meet for the first time May 29.
