Two From Upchurch Set To Attend Gifted Program Two eighth grade students from Upchurch Junior High have been accepted to attend the Summer Superior and Gifted Program at Western Carolina University June 30 - July 25. Shari Simmons, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pinkston Simmons, Jr., and Billy Webb, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Webb, will participate in the enrichment program which is keyed to the American Bicentennial celebration. This year's theme is The Program of a Nation'. The students will concentrate on progress in science and how basic scientific skills in biology and physics laboratories can be used to seek solutions to problems facing mankind, program coordinators said. Eagles 6-2 Record The Upchurch Eagles finished their baseball season with a 6-2 record. The Eagles offensive attack this season was lead by Leonard Everette, who batted .666 and also lead the team in stolen bases. Gary Brayboy and Bruce Carroll aided in the ottensive attack. Brayboy batted .500 and Carroll followed with .333 average. Defensively, the Eagles were led by ace Eddie Jackson, with a 5-0 record, who struck out 51 batters. Billy Webb H oke ighlights by Tcrri Tucker The Hoke High band will present their spring concert Thursday, May 22, at 8:00 in the Hoke High gymnasium. The public is invited. The 1975 Senior All Star Banquet will be held Tuesday, May 20, at 6:30 in the Gibson cafeteria. Senior All Stars and parents are invited. Several seniors will be recognized for outstanding work done during their senior year. The graduating class of 1975 will hold Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises Sunday, June first in the Hoke High stadium at 4:00. The public is invited. The Hoke High Chorus and Chorale held their spring concert Thursday, May 15, in the Hoke gym. Both chorus and chorale were outfitted in pastel colors. They presented various types of music with several solos. Twenty members of the Health Careers Club attended the Fifth Annual Health Careers Fair sponsored by the North Carolina Memorial Hospital at Chapel Hill. The theme of the fair was "Wake Up to Health Careers". There were numerous exhibits that gave the students a better understanding of the variety of career opportunities in the health field. Career information was available from personnel in each area. The trip proved informative and interesting to those attending. The Health Occupation II Class were guests of the owners of the Open Arms Rest Home, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Chalaire and Mr. and Mrs. John Leandro, at a cookout. May 13, at the Hoke Civic Center. The class members and their dates had an enjoyable evening eating hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings, and dancing. Ann Melton, Bemice Jones and Janice Womack, Health Occupation II students, worked as volunteers at Camp Easter in the Pines, May 16-18. This was a part of the Family Camping program at Camp Easter designed this particular weekend for families with mentally retarded children.
