Bucks Rule
All-Conference List
Hoke High players dominated the
all-conference selections and the Bucks'
coach was named Coach of the Year by
Southeast 3A Conference baseball
coaches last week.
Seven Bucks were named to the
14-man honor team. They are Donnie
Monroe, Timmy Ross, Noah Hendrix,
Allen Thomas, Curtis Jones. David
McNeill and Eddie Ramsey.
George Maynor received honorable
mention.
Coach Terry Grier copped his third
Coach of the Year award in as many
years of coaching. While at Chowan
Hi^i School, he received the M.J.
Chappell award as top coach in the
Tidewater 2A Conference and last year
he was named coach of theyear from
Whiteville in the Three Rivers 3A
Conference.
"I thought this was an especially
meaningful honor in that the calibre of
boys that I had to work with made our
season and all its honors possible," Grier
said.
He commented on each of his
all-conference players:
Monroe, a senior chosen as utility
infielder, played five different positions
and played well at each. He was a
shortstop, third baseman, second
baseman, center fielder and left fielder.
He is being recruited by some colleges,
such as Western Carolina.
? Ros, a junior, is perhaps the best
defensive second baseman we've seen
this year and we've played a lot of good
ball clubs. All he needs is to hit the ball
better to be a complete ball player.
? Hendrix is a junior who switched
to catcher this year. He played second
base last year and adapted tremendously
well to the change to behind the plate.
He had a big role in our having two
pitchers to make all-conference.
? Thomas, a junior named to
centerfield, could have made
all-conference at any position. He has
been outstanding anywhere he has
played, which has included centerfield,
first base, second base and pitcher.
? Jones, a senior chosen at right
field, is a much improved ball player
who has been outstanding offensively.
He needs to continue work on his
defensive play.
? McNeill, a freshman, has done a
tremendous job as a pitcher and leads
the team in RBIs.
? Ramsey, a junior, pitched well all
year and had some tou^i losses in
non-conference games. He was second
on the team in hitting during conference
games.
? Maynor, who received honorable
mention at shortstop, has a tremendous
amount of talent for a first year senior
ball player. He is vastly improved and
could have been possibly a pro prospect
with a better baseball background."
Other players named to the
all-conference team were Robbie
Bennett, Lumberton, shortstop; Rodney
Calcutt, Pinecrest, third base; Frankie
Johnson, Clinton, first base; Nelson
Pusser, Pinecrest, utility catcher; Cecil
Blake, Pinecrest, left field; George
Sessoms, Dunn, utility outfielder; Mike
Coleman, Lumberton, pitcher.
