The end of a journey begun a dozen years ago will conic Sunday for approximately 280 graduating seniors it Hoke High. Commencement exercises will begin it 4 pjn. June 1 at the stadium. In addition, 23 adults who have Earned their high school diplomas, will graduate then. Dr. James William Batten, director of the department of secondary Education at East Carolina University will give the commencement address. A native of Goldsboro, Dr. Batten received his BA, MA and Ed.D from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has done advanced graduate work at Columbia University and the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a high school teacher of science, math and French and is a former high school principal. Dr. Batten has served as a narrator at the Morehead Planetarium and has authored a number of books and articles in scholarly journals. "Stars, Atoms and God", Our Neighbors in Space", "Conserving American Resources" and, one of his latest, "Rumblings of a Rolling Stone." Dr. Batten is listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Outstanding Educators of America", among other biographical works. He has received numerous honors and awards for both academic and civic endeavors. The invocation will be given by the Rev. Milton Williams, pastor of McLaughlin Chapel AME Zion Church. Hoke High Principal Allen Edwards will present awards and scholarships. Diplomas for day school graduates will be presented by Edwards, Frank Richards, Mrs. Betty Rogers and Miss Emma Mims. Diplomas for the adult school graduates will be presented by Edwards, Dr. Raymond Stone, president of Sandhills Community College and Mrs. Gloria Williams, director of the adult program. The Rev. John Ropp. pastor of Raeford Presbyterian Church, will give the benediction. Pamela Smith, president of the senior class, will welcome graduates and guests. Other senior class officers are Linda Gale Bratcher, vice-president; Jcryl Lynn Bratcher, Dr. James W. Batten secretary and Donna Marie Poe. treasurer. Marshals chosen from the junior class for graduation ceremonies are Margaret Postel, chief marshall and Dwan Upchurch, co-chief. Other marshals are Cynthia Diane Cook.
