Burgess TOBACCO ASSOCIATES ASSESSMENTS -- Due to recent changes in the acreage - poundage program for flue ? cured tobacco, it is necessary to change the procedure for collecting the Tobacco Associates assessments in North Carolina and South Carolina and the excise tax for tobacco in Virginia. In 1975 the Tobacco Associates assessment and the Virginia excise tax will be collected using poundage as a basis for determining the amount deducted instead of acreage as used in previous years. It was decided that 5c per hundred pounds would be an equivalent to the $1.00 per acre collected in years past. This decision was based on the fact that in 1975 the national production average for flue - cured tobacco was 2014 pounds per acre. The 5c per hundred pounds will be collected each time the grower sells. Tobacco Associates, Inc., the promotion organization for the flue-cured tobacco growers, directs its efforts at expanding existing markets and developing new ones for U.S. flue - cured tobacco. Growers' contributions from Virginia, North Carolina. South Carolina, Georgia and Florida enable the organization to carry out these national and international efforts. REDUCED DEMAND SEEN FOR SOYBEANS - Reduced demand for soybean oil and meal, the prospect of one of die largest September carryovers ever, and the possibility of a large 1975 soybean harvest highlight a report issued on June 20 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the "Fats and Oils Situation," issued by USDA's Economic Research Service, disappearance of soybean is expected to drop to about 1.18 billion bushels, the lowest since 1968-69. This low . disappearance will likely bring about a September carry - over of around 225 million bushels, the third largest ever. This situation report holds a slim i - hope for a market turnaround if the 1975 soybean crop is late or sharply reduced and if worldwide demand increases. Both of these conditions seem unlikely at this time. Rates Have Increased On Long Distance Calls j.t_. ciuen, president ot Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company, has announced that new long distance rates for calls between points within the state have been filed with the North Carolina Utilities Commission. This filing was requested to be effective July 1, and is a result of Southern Bell's request in 1974 for increased intrastate toll rates and the Commission's prior ruling that all telephone companies are to adopt uniform toll rate schedules. Carolina and other North Carolina telephone companies were made parties by the Commission to Southern Bell's request. Public notice was given of the proposed rates in September. 1974, and a hearing was held on the matter in January, 1975. Under the new rate schedule, an initial period of one minute for customer - dialed station ? to - station calls is established to replace the present three-minute initial period. All other type calls, such as person - to - person, collect, and credit card calls, will continue to have an initial period of three minutes. Cluen said that additional revenues resulting from the new rates will be considered by the Commission when it makes a decision later this year on Carolina Telephone's present request for increases in local service rates. Customers can still realize substantial savings by dialing station ? to - station compared to placing other type calls. Tax Totaled Local Sales and use tax collections amounted to S17,110.11 for May in the county, state revenue officials said in a monthly report. The statewide total S9,799.716.03.
