SUMMER COOLER - Members take advantage of a hot day for a cool dip in the Swim Association pool. Tournaments Monday Tournament play in mens and womens Softball leagues gets underway Monday night, the recreation department announced. In the womens league, Doby's Funeral Home takes on Burlington at 7 P.M. Monday night. The winner Will play Hoke Jaycees Tuesday night at 9 P.M. At 8 P.M., B & J Funeral Home plays Pig 'n Chicken. The winner of that match plays Hollingsworth "Barber Shop Tuesday night at 7 P.M. The winner of the Hollingsworth game will play the winner of the Jaycees game Wednesday night at 8 P.M. In the same playoffs, Kennerty's and Gentry's Tire will lead off at 6:30 P.M. Virgil's and Hoke Concrete play at 7:30, and Gentry's Tire and Kennerty's start at 8:30 P.M. at 9:30 P.M., Lumbee Marval takes on McCain to complete the first night of play. Second round playoffs begin at 7:30 P.M.Tuesday. Richmond Co. Tournaments The Richmond county Sportsman Club will sponsor an ASA sanctioned mens Softball tournament, the Peach Tree Invitational, July 11 - 13 at Rohanem and Cordova parks in Rockingham. A Peach Blossom Invitational Tournament for women is scheduled for July 18 - 20 at the Hamlet Fairgrounds, Memorial park, and pony league park. The Textile Invitational Tournament for non-sanctioned teams will be played July 25 - 27 in the Rockingham parks. Information about entries may be obtained from Bruce Hardin at the Sportsman Club. Softball Action Lumbee Captures Seat Lumbee Marval captured the first place seat for the regular season Friday night. Playing a two out of three series, Lumbee won the first 3-2 over Gentry's Tire after going nine innings, and then won the second game, 5-2, despite weather conditions that halted j>lay twice. P. Baker, H. McCollum, and H. Jacobs scored Lumbee three runs in the first game. B. Bounds and B. Manuel scored two runs for Gentry. Larry Phillips and J. King scored a run each in Gentry's second game for the only scores, while Nate Singletary, W. Mills, L. Baker, W. Denkins, and H. Jacobs tallied five for Lumbee. In other action last week before Friday's finale, SPCA lost to Kennerty's, 10-9, and Gentry's downed Carolina Turf 5-2. Carolina Turf also went down in defeat to SPCA, 11-9, and Kennerty's beat Gentry's 9-3. McCain whipped Hoke Concrete 10-2, but lost to Lumbee 14-1. Virgil's beat Hoke Concrete 12-2, and then went on to trip Lumbee 11-4. Hoke Jaycees started the night off with a 14-2 victory over Buie and Jackson after four and a half innings. Barbara Campbell hit two homers to drive in five runs. Pig 'n Chicken upset Doby's 4-2 to start the turn of events. Burlington followed suit by upsetting Hollingsworth's 7-6. The mens and womens tournament will begin July 7 with Youth League Wraps Up Monday night Kiwanis defeated the Lions 5 - 4 after nine innings of play. VFW downed WOW 6-5. Uons came back in the final game of the night of overpower SYC 12-0 after five innings. Tuesday night wrapped up the regular season. The Rescue Squad was trailing the Jaycees 6-0 late in the game, but began to play like a first place team and tied the game 6-6 at the end of regulation time. In the seventh inning, they exploded with five runs to take the victory. I ARCHER Y CHAMP - Bill Barnwell poses with his blue ribbons won for his archery skill at Friday's 4-H District Activity Day in Union Pines. Local 4-H Member Named District Winner Bill Barnwell was named district winner in archery demonstration at the south central 4-H Activity Day competition Friday at Union Pines School in Moore County. Barnwell is a member of the Sunset Senior 4-H troop here. He will represent Hoke County at the state competition the week of July 21-25 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, competing against six other 4-H winners from across the state. Thirty-six persons affiliated with the 4-H clubs here attended the Friday festival. Three groups participated in talent presentations. Arthur Kemp performed a piano solo, Dana Connell, Sharon Connell and Judy Scull presented a dance routine, and Wanda Locklear sang a solo. Miss Locklear received the top blue ribbon award for her presentation. Others receiving blue ribbons for demonstrations were Wendell Baker (jr. archery); Debbie McNeill and Robert Attaway (automotive skill driving); Richard Cole (beef char-grill); Linda Griffin and Angela Strother (open class team); Jimmy Turner (poultry barbeque); Gwyn Mansfield (sewing); Tony Minshew (wildlife); and Linda Croft (artistic arrangement). Receiving participation ribbons for their demonstrations were Judy Crissman (horticultural production) and Delores Jones (public speaking).
