Veterans Group Life Insurance
(VGL1L
The new program offers up to
S20.000 coverage for a monthly
premium of S3.40 for veterans under
35. For those 35 and older, the
maximum coverage costs S6.80 per
month. The non-renewable policy is
intended as interim protection during
a veteran's readjustment to civilian
life, a VA spokesman has explained.
This five-year policy can be
converted from the Veterans Group
Life Insurance Policy into an
individual policy at standard rates,
regardless of health or physical
condition, when it expires.
Applications and the first
premium must be received before
August 2. 1975. Complete
information on the program and
assistance with applications can be
obtained by contacting any North
Carolina State. District. County or
Post Veterans Service Officer.
Here are this month's questions
and answers:
Q. I am a disabled military retiree.
I know that in order to get VA
compensation I must waive a portion
of my retired pay. If I can qualify for
the SI50 VA clothing allowance
because my prosthetic device wears
out my clothing, will 1 also have to
waive SI50 of my retired pay?
A. No. Military retirees need not
waive any protion of their retired
pay to qualify.

0. My husband has a 50 percent
disability, stemming from his
Vietnam War service. Would 1 qualify
for Dependents education benefits?
A. Your husband's service
connected disability would have to
be 100 percent and permanent in
order for you to get Dependents
educational assistance.
Q. After becoming eligible for
CHAMPVA. I learned that our family
doctor is not a participant in the
program. Does this mean I'll have to
change to one who is?
A. No. However, when using your
nonparticipating family physician, it
will be your responsibility to provide
the proper claim forms and to submit
them yourself for reimbursement.

Q. I understand that if 1 should
remarry. 1 will lose my CHAMPVA
benefits, which I now hold as the
widow of a deceased veteran. Would
my son and daughter also lose their
benefits in the event of my
remarriage?
A. Your remarriage will not affect
your children's CHAMPVA
entitlement, but yours will be
terminated, as you already know.

Q. Is the privilege of burial in a
National Cemetery extended to all
veterans or just to those who are
destitute, or earning less than a
certain annual income?
A. Burial in a National Cemetery is
allowed any veteran whose
separation from the military was
under conditions other than
dishonorable. There are no minimum
income considerations.

The procedure for collecting the
Tobacco Associates assessments in
North and South Carolina and the
excise tax in Virginia had been
changed. In 1975 the use of
poundage as a basis for determining
the amount deducted will be used
instead of acreage. It was decided
that five cents per hundred pounds
would be an equivalent to the one
dollar per acre collected in years
past. This decision was based on the
fact that in 1974 the national
production average for flue-cured
tobacco was 2,014 pounds per acre.
The fee will be collected each time
the grower sells.
Small bagworms are beginning to
appear on cedars, junipers and
aborvitae. Now is the time to control
these pests while they are small.
Where only a few insects are
noticeable, they may be picked and
crushed. For heavy infestations,
Dursban and Diazinon are registered
pesticides. Follow the labels for
complete instructions. Needlecast
continues to be severe on pines in
this area. The fungus attacks old
needles but the new growth will not
be affected. Pine beetles are also
active in trees at this time. You
should watch your trees to see if
rosin is coming out. If so, it is
probably from a beetle attack. Many
trees die in a short period.
Home gardeners are beginning to
dig their irish potatoes. Some tips on
drying potatoes are: 1) Remove
potatoes from open sunlight as soon
as possible. 2) Select a storage space
that is dark and is as cool as possible.
This can be the crawl space under a
house, basement, storm cellar or
open shed. Place potatoes in baskets
or pour out gently on a dry surface
such as straw or similar material.
Remove cut or damaged potatoes.
Examine occasionally and remove
any that might be rotting.

There's an old story about a
brilliant corporation lawyer who was
traveling across the country in a
Pullman train.
That night as he was preparing to
settle down in his berth for die night,
he was overheard to pray:
"Now 1 lay me down to sleep. I
pray the Lord my soul to keep. . ."
For all his accomplishments, the
man had never grown-up spiritually.
In his religious life, he is still a child,
existing, as Paul puts it, "on milk."
This was one of the problems to
which Paul addressed himself when
he wrote his second letter to the
church at Corinth. There was a great
deal of immaturity in the church
there, Paul observed. Pulling no
punches. Pauj says pointedly:
I must speak to you as babes, I fed
you with milk, not solid food: for
you were not ready for it. and are
not even now (I Corinthians 3:2). In
the Epistle to the Hebrews the same
theme is sounded: You need milk,
not solid food; for everyone who
lives on milk is . . . a child. But solid
food is for the mature . . .
Later, in the thirteenth chapter of
First Corinthians, Paul reminds the
people there that when you are a
child, it is all right to act like a child.
But when we grow-up, he says, we
are to give up our childish ways and
act with maturity.
Dr. Harry Overstreet wrote a book
some years ago entitled, "The Mature
Mind". The thesis of the book is that
most of our troubles are the result of
our failure to grow-up. A
psychiatrist, Hugh Missildine, has
written a provocative book about
"Your Inner Child of the Past."
Immaturity, he says is the result of
letting our "inner child of the past"
continue to dominate our lives in the
present.
Paul indicated that the Corinthians
were still not ready for spiritual
"solid food." The evidence for this
assessment was to be found in the
jealousy and strife that continued in
the Corinthian churches. You cannot
be mature when you continue to be
dominated by these emotions.
Actually, said Paul, when they
behaved this way, they were really
"behaving like ordinary men" (I
Corinthians 3:3). Apparently the
Christian, as. Paul see it, is not
supposed to be like "ordinary men".
There is to be something special
about him, something extraordinary.
There is to be growth to a more solid
type of spiritual food.
There are many Christians who are
constantly fed a died of spiritual
milk. These are people who are
spiritually "babes in arms," people
who ire not yet ready for the solid
food of Jeuu Christ.

Bicentennial.
Coins Are Changing
For The Bicentennial
The hand flips a coin. Heads 1 win.
Tails you win.
The eyes light on the head of a
colonial drummer. Did you win or
lose the toss?
You won!
That head is really a tail.
You can take the word of Mary
Brooks. Director of the U.S. Mint.
She's the nation's coinmaker and
says the colonial drummer was
chosen in a national design
competition to appear on the back of
the new Bicentennial quarter. Georec
Washington, she says, siiil heads the
coin over the new date -- 1776 - 1976
and it was all done to celebrate our
country's 200th birthday.
"I know big decisions, like
whether or not to walk the dog in
the rain, rest on the flip of a coin."
Mrs Brooks says, "and I want to
warn the nation's big decision makers
about the coming big change in their
small change."
In all. the Mint is changing the
designs on the backs of three coins in
honor of the Bicentennial Along
with Washington on the quarter,
those famous faces of Kennedy and
Eisenhower, with the new twin date,
still head the half dollar and dollar.
Again, it's lite backs that carry the
new Bicentennial designs.
Independence Hall won its place on
the back of the half dollar. And the
moon and Liberty Bell was chosen
for the dollar reverse.
By July 7, banks should begin
receiving the first of the circulating
Bicentennial coins to be released -
the Kennedy - Independence Hall
half dollar. Before the end of the
year, the Federal Reserve System will
iiave had the time to supply the
nation's commercial banks with the
newly redesigned quarter and dollar.
"To me. these coins like all our
coins ?? are symbols of our nation's
700 years of freedom." Mrs. Brooks
says. "They are small links with our
historical and cultural heritage that
will touch the hands of every man,
woman and child in America."
" 'Liberty!' was the rallying cry of
the American Revolution - and
'Liberty' has been proclaimed and
inscribed on each and every coin
since the creation of the U.S. Mint in
17')2."
Launching a national coinage was
a big step in the formation of our
young nation. "Now," Mrs. Brooks
says, "we are launching the most
significant coinage change in the
history of the mint."
The winning design on the back of
the quarter is the work of Jack L.
Ahr of Arlington Heights, III. Seth G.
Huntington of Minneapolis, Minn.,
executed the reverse on the half
dollar. And Dennis R. Williams, a
sculpture student at the Columbus
College of Art and Design,
Columbus, Ohio, designed ,the dollar
reverse.

Jesus makes so much difference to
life that He Himself described it as
being born again. This new life is like
passing from slavery into sonship,
from darkness into light, from
existence into living.
We are under new management.
Because Christ is our Lord, we are
delivered from a tug-of-war in which
we are pulled both to the stars and to
the mud. We are not divided but
integrated. So then we receive the
peace and joy that Jesus promised.
We tread a new way, with a new
Master and with new resources.
What better phrase to describe this
new life than to say it is a new birth?
Old thinp have pasted away and all
things have become new.
?PRAYER: Help us, O Lord, so to
commit ourselves to Thee that we
may rejoice in a life which is life
eternal. We pray the prayer Thou
hast taught us to pray, "Our Father
who art in heaven, hallowed be thy
name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us hot into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the
