?Hoke County Young
People In Majority
(Special to The News Journal)
NEW YORK, June 14 ? How many
of the important events of modem
times have taken place within the
lifetime of present residents of Hoke
County?
What proportion of ihe local
population goes back far enough in
time to D-Day in 1944, when the
Allies crossed the English Channel
and landed in France?
Or to the year 1927, when
Lindbergh made the First non-stop
New York to Paris flight across the
Atlantic? Or to 1934, when the first
quintuplets, the Dionne sisters, were
born in Canada?
Fewer than 14 percent of Hoke
County's population were on hand in
1918 when Germany surrendered
and World War I ended, the
Government's latest figures on local
age brackets show.
When the 21st Amendment was
passed in 1933, doing away with
prohibition, no more than 29 percent
in the local area had yet been born.
? The formation of the United
Nations and the production of the
first atomic bomb, both in 1945,
could have been witnessed by only
t39 percent of the present local
population.
A new generation, to whom many
of these happenings are of purely
historical interest and not part of
their personal memories, has sprung
up in Hoke County.
Today, the figures show, there are
more of these young people around,
in proportion to the total
population, than in the past.
The explanation is that in the
years just after World War II, when
the birth rate zoomed upward, babies
were arriving on the scene in record
numbers.
As a result, despite the fact that
the birth rate has dropped
considerably in the last few years,
more than half the population of tire
United States is under age 30 at the
present time.
Numerically, those in the 10 to IS
age group comprise the largest
five-year segment in the country.
About 10 percent of all Americans
are in that bracket.
In Hoke County, the figures show,
the median age of the population is
21.7, which means that there are as
many local people below that age as
there are above it.
Elsewhere in the United States the
median age is now 28.1 and, in the
State of North Carolina,
approximately 26.S.

Southern Nat'l
Income Up
Southern National Corporation,
holding company for Southern
National Bank, has reported net
operating income for the fust six
months of 1975 of $1,281,862, or
$1.10 per share.
Income for the same time last year
was $1,003, 401, or ninety five cents
per share.
World Famine Still Stalks
Continuing Population Boom
The Doomsday question still is
unanswered for a hungry world: Is
the day coming when there won't be
enough food to go around, when
world-wide famine will visit the
earth?
"Never across the face of our
planet has the outcome been more in
doubt," writes Thomas Y. Canby in
the July National Geographic.
Mankind's future rides on the race
between the world's growing
population - 203,000 more mouths
to feed every day -- and man's ability
to produce more and more food. The
evidence of the problem is awesome.
Some 760 million people crowd
the nations of India. Bangladesh, and
Pakistan ~ more than live in all of
Africa and South America. Within 30
years, say experts, the population of
these three countries - already no
stranger to famine - will be doubled.
At the same time, almost all the
world's land that is economical to
cultivate - some 3.6 billion acres -
already is being used to grow food.
Today there are 3.9 billion mouths
to feed in the world. Next year there
will be 74 million more, 15 million
of them in India alone.
Meanwhile, climatologists say
there may be changes in the world's
weather patterns, bringing
devastating droughts to regions
where most of the population lives.
The green revolution," the recent
development of super strains of
wheat and rice that greatly increased
crop yields, seemed to be easing the
shortage of food where it was needed
most -- until all but neutralized by a
combination of events in the early
1970's.
Drought, typhoons, frost, floods
cut harvests severely. Peru's fish
catch, traditionally the world's
largest, drastically declined, and with
it a major source of poultry and
livestock feed. Factories could not
meet increased demand for critically
needed fertilizer.
United States food surpluses that
had cushioned earlier shortages
withered away with these
disaster-borne demands and with the
sale of 28 million tons of grain to the
Soviet Union, coping with a poor
harvest.
The United Nations now identifies
33 countries that are seriously
threatened by major food shortages.
