Virgil's Moves Up In Bid For Title By Pal Scott Virgil's downed Western Auto of Red Springs 74 in Monday night's action as they continued to make their bid for the District Five Chamiponship. Currie's downed Lumbee Marval 12-6, allowing only II hits to Currie's 17. It was a tighter game for Bodenheimer's, who pulled out a 6-3 win over Hoke Concrete, with each team getting nine hits. Gentry's Tire was upset by SPCA in a 2-1 battle. Eddie McNeil] was 2-3 at the plate, scoring SPCA's only runs. Benton's Construction defeated Si. Pauls 5-4 with a two-tun homer by C. Strickland. Lions Capture Title In Tarheel Play By Pat Scott The Lions captured the Hoke Little Tarheel baseball championship Friday night after a day's delay due to rain. The Lions defeated die Jaycees, 11-4, in a tense game. Knox was the winning pitcher for the Lions with eight strikeouts and fine defensive backup from his team. The Jaycee's pitching from McKoy and Posey wasn't enough, even though they had a combined total of 12 strikeouts, it didn't stop the powerful Lions. In the first round of tournament play, the Kiwanis defeated the Sheriffs Department while the Jaycees held the Rescue Squad scoreless 3-0. Tuesday night Recreation Department was victorious over Hoke Drug 5-3 in spite of Jr. Blue's double and two-run homer for Hoke Drug. K. Morrison and D. Virgil had doubles to aid their team to the semi-finals. NRFD led the way 4-1 until the last inning when the Lions came up with four big ones to defeat them 5-4. A change of pitchers and a balk brought the game to an end. Wednesday the Jaycees took an early lead in the first inning 2-1 and maintained it. keeping Kiwanis to two runs while scoring six more. It was a good defensive game, but the Kiwanis couldn't get die hits. Final score was 8-2. The Recreation department lost a close one to the Lions 807 in a game that went right down to the wire. Jude scored the winning run from a walk and a couple of passed balls off the catcher. McDuffie hit a two-run homer for Recreation Department but couldn't match the pitching strength of Smith and Knox of the Lions.
