COMMENT When we should be careful in making our choices for it is true that we gain one thing and lose something else. Alarm Sounds, 6Ma9 Bell Gets Blame Sheriffs deputies leveled criticism at Carolina Telephone Co. Tuesday afternoon after a silent alarm at a business was sounded and telephone workmen reportedly had not notified the dispatcher at the jail work was in progress. "Why don't they call us and tell us they're out there," deputy George McGuire complained after deputy J.E. Lamont made a high speed run to Pete's Esso station in response to an alarm, and then reported back Keep the spirit of 1776 ringing. telephone workmen were in the area and no robbery was taking place. "It's not so bad if it's one of the burglar alarms, but when these holdup alarms go off, we don't know what we've got," McGuire said. Mike Pittman, manager of the Fayette ville office of Carolina Telephone, said the policy of the company is that workmen will notify both the customer and law enforcement agencies concerned when a circuit to a burglar alarm is being worked on. 'These burglar alarm circuits are marked and protected at both the originating point and terminating point so someone will recognize it as a burglar alarm," PittmaS said. 'They are supersensiflw, and it is possible they can be set Wf," he said. "But I am not *wair that this happens frequently. If Ifere is some problem here, the people at the jafl should contact us and we'll be happy to discuss it," he said.
