The first place winners in the archery and B.B. contest were the Baker brothers. The Antioch Eager Beavers 4-H Club were very enthused and had perfect attendance at the sewing class offered by the home extension office. Classes were held Monday, August 4th through Friday, August 8th from 9 A.M. until noon. The girls made pillows, dolls from 32 oz. Pepsi Cola bottles and shoulder bag purses. Thursday of that week all club members met for picnic lunch and classes for the complete group in sun safety and target practice and sports fun. Their classes were from 2 P.M. until 5 P.M. We would like to express out deep appreciation to Rosemary Inman who came so faithfully to give these classes in sewing. We cannot stress enough how much she gave of her time and herself. So thanks are very little to give in return. We would also like to say thank you to Gary Culp and to Freddie O'Neal who worked so hard with this group of young people. Because of the wonderful time we had working together and the hard work that each of the Club members did we decided to treat the Eager Beavers with a day of swimming and a picnic at Permastone Lake and we would like to extend our thanks to Mr. Cecil Dunn who let us in as a group for a reduced price. It is people like these who will help us to succeed as a 4-H group and help us fulfill our motto - 'To make the best better.' Our parents have all been most cooperative too. scs Activities F.O. Clark District Conservationist Despite heavy rainfall and som< flash flooding in North Carolina ir recent weeks, every flood preventior dam built to Soil Conservatioi Service engineering specifications ha functioned with no washouts o other failures, it was disclosed bj State Conservationist Jesse L. Hick: of Raleigh. Working with local sponsors, th( Soil Conservation Service ha: completed 61 earthen dams as pari of watershed projects, and anothei eight multi-purpose dams in the North Central Piedmont Resource Conservation and Developmen Project. "We are very proud that these dams have withstood some severe tests of high water," Hick: commented. "Since the prograrr ' began in North Carolina in the 1950's, not a single dam has failed.' The dams provide protection from flooding to farm cropland, urbar areas, highways and other public facilities. Completed dams, although made of earth, are protected by thick grass or other cover for erosion control and other environments considerations.
