Wedding Ceremony Held
On The Banks Of Tne Buffalo
(contributed)
The morning dew was beginning to
dissipate into the atmosphere as the
sun rose higher over the horizon. It
was soon evident that a hot humid
day was in store for those friends and
relatives who would be gathering for
a wedding in the woods. Around
10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 23,
folks began to arrive injeeps, trucks,
and cars of all sizes. They gathered
on a hill where shuttle ushers with
their 4-wheel drive vehicles
transported everyone down the
rough, rutted, dusty, woods road to a
cabin on the banks of Buffalo Creek.
As guests arrived at the cabin they
seated themselves outdoors
underneath a multi-colored
parachute for shade and listened to
* the soft sounds of the creek rushing
by. An altar made from cypress
stumps and adorned with plants and
flowers awaited the entrance of the
wedding party.
At 11:15 a.m., Lauchlin Gainey
McFadyen and Linda Carpenter
Elton walked in as Elizabeth Prince
of Pinehurst played a lively Handel
sonata on the flute. Ronald E.
Becker of Raeford led the ceremony
with some original opening remarks
and a service he had compiled. An
Apache poem closed the ceremony.
A receiving line composed of the
bride and groom, the bride's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Carpenter, and the
groom's mother, Mrs. Lacy D.
McFadyen,greeted guests.
A light picnic lunch followed with
sausage and cheese biscuits, gazpacho
soup, bean salad, deviled eggs, loaves
of home-made whole wheat bread,
carrot cake, and fruit punches.
Contributors to the wedding feast
were Mrs. George Ashley, Thomas
and Juliet Evans, Carol Sealey, Mrs.
Mildred Carpenter, Mrs. Joe
Carpenter, Mrs. Lacy D. McFadyen,
Miss Margaret Gainey and Miss Annie
McKeithan.
Later, friends of the bridegroom
conspired to initiate him into the
marriage rites properly and threw
him into the creek. At that moment
the bride and groom were saluted by
an overhead pass from an airplane
piloted by Larry Upchurch.
The usher, Crawford Thomas,
Virgil Carpenter, Harold Brady and
Joe Carpenter Jr., began shuttling
guests back to their vehicles on the
hill.
The couple left for a week's trip to
Harker's Island. They will reside at
Pinebluff upon their return.
