Continued from page 1 Goodman, who testified Pruitt was standing in the street. "I asked if anybody was still in the house. He said 'Yes, they've cut her open, and they've raped her and they set her house on fire", Goodman testified. Goodman said he told Robert Hallisey, city - county identification bureau technician who was the first police officer to arrive, of his conversation with Pruitt after finding the bodies in the house. McKinnon ovcruled defense objections and allowed the testimony of several witnesses who said Pruitt admitted the slayings to them. Roy Starling, special deputy for Cumberland County, testified he had a conservation with Pruitt while detailed as a bailiff in District Court. Starling said Pruitt referred to the burned Donlin home as "that place belonged to the woman I killed". Gerlinc Smith, deputy assigned to the city-county identification bureau, testified site was present during the conversation with Pruitt and Starling and corroborated Starling's testimony. Pruitt's former commanding officer at Ft. Bragg, Capt. Jarl Hannum, testified that while visiting Pruitt in jail Pruitt admitted the three killings. On a later visit, Pruitt said "I am sorry about the children" Hannum related. Daniel Smith, a former cellmate of Pruitt, also testified he heard Pruitt admit to the slayings. "I asked him how he could cut up a woman like that and he just said, 'It happens'", Smith said. Smith testified he asked Pruitt on another occasion why he burned the house and Pruitt told him, "If it burned down, they couldn't tell she had been murdered". McKinnon refused to allow testimony from a Cumberland county jailer, Billy E. Byrd.who said he became friendly with Pruitt and spoke to him on several occasions. Byrd testified he said he couldn't understand how he (Pruitt) got himself into the mess he was in on a visit, and Pruitt replied "I don't know why 1 killed this lady and these two children." The jury of four women and eight men, with two alternates, may begin deliberating Pruitt's fate at the conclusion of the defense presentation. Grimes indicated McKinnon's decision to admit key testimony has considerably strengthened the prosecution case. "If it hadn't been for that fact, in my opinion, it would not have even gone to the jury", he said. not covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (Federal Wage-Hour Law). The minimum wage increase comes as a result of action taken by the 1975 General Assembly. Also effective October 1, persons 65 years of age and over who work in establishments covered by th? N.C. Minimum Wage Law will be entitled to receive the new $2.00 minimum. Previously, this group has been specifically exempt from coverage under the law. The N.C. Department of Labor estimates that at least 35,000 of the state's lowest paid citizens will receive direct pay boosts under the new Tar Heel wage floor. They are employed as sales clerks, stock and material handlers, food service employees, cleanup workers, and in a variety of other unskilled or semi - skilled retail and service industry occupations. The N.C. Minimum Wage Law applies only to establishments employing four or more employees. The law originally has enacted by the 1959 General Assembly and has been amended repeatedly in subsequent legislative sessions to expand its coverage and to increase the required pay minimum. The original law set a wage floor of 75 cents an hour. This was gradually raised, over the years, to 85 cents, SI.00. S1.2S. $1.45. S1.60, $ 1.80, and now to $2.00. Veterans Corner EDITOR'S NOTE: Veterans and their families are asking thousands of questions concerning the benefits their Government provides for them through the Veterans Administration. Below are some representative queries. Additional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q - My husband, a military retiree, died of service-connected causes in May 1963 and was buried in a private cemetery. 1 received the S2S0 VA burial allowance but did not know there was a SI50 plot allowance available for veterans buried in a private cemetery. Was this in effect in 1963? A - The SI50 plot allowance became effective Sept. I, 1973. The new law also increased the burial allowance up to $800 for veterans who die of service-connected causes Q -- I have located a home 1 can buy under the GI Bill, but the asking price is higher than the VA appraised price. Can I pay more than the market value to get that house? A -? Yes, if you pay the difference between the VA appraisal and the price of the home from your own resources (no borrowing). VA cannot approve a loan that exceeds the reasonable value of the home. Q -- If a veteran wants to change to a school in another state, where should he file his request? A -? His request should be filed with the VA regional office that currently has his records.
