HELPFUL STREET SIGN - Motorists traveling east on Ehvood Avenue may become surprised at the Fulton Street intersection to find they are now on Edinborough Avenue, without ever leaving Elwood. There was no clear explanation for the disappearing street. Karate Championships In Raeford Oct. 11 The Southern Invitational Karate Championships will be held in Raeford Oct. 11 at Hoke County High School, the Karate Institute announced. Competitors from Ohio, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina will vie for 48 trophies in kata and kumite. Directors are Don Bendell and Al Gene Caraulia. Bob Chaney, internationally known karate master and U.S. representative to the World Union Karate Organization, will be chief referee. Registration opens at 10:30 A.M. preceded by a 30 minute referee clinic. Eliminations begin with black belt forms at 12 noon. Black belt fighting and finals are scheduled at 3:30 P.M. Trophies will be awarded for three divisions in black belt, light, middle and heavy, and also women's black belt. Brown belt, green belt,white belt, junior (10-15), pee wee (nine and under), women's advance, and women's novice will also be judged. Kata (art form) will be judged in four divisions: black belt, adult, junior (IS and under), and weapons. Entry fees are $8 for one event, S12 for two, and S14 for three. First, second, and third place throphies will be awarded for each division. Admission is $3 in advance or $4 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the Pig 'N Chicken in Raeford or at the Karate Institute next to the Little Whale restaurant off Hwy. 401. National Guard In Raleigh Planning Texas Summer Camp Area members of the North Carolina Army National Guard traveled to Raleigh to discuss plans for next summer's two weeks of annual training with their Regular Army counterparts. Lieutenant Colonel David McMillan of Fayetteville, the Commanding Officer of the Second Battalion, 25 2d Armor, met with Brigadier General Jack N. Merritt, the Assistant Division Commander, First Cavalry Division of Fort Hood, Texas. Since last summer the 2/252d Armor has been affiliated with the First Cavalry Division. An affiliation between a National Guard unit and a Regular Army unit means that in the event of a federal mobilization, the Guard unit would become a part of llie federal unit. The peacetime role of the National Guard unit remains unchanged. Next summer the 2/252d Armor is scheduled to spend its two weeks of annual training at Fort Hood, Texas from July 10 through July 24. The battalion is headquartered in Raeford and Red Springs and has units in four other Sandhills communities. The purpose of the weekend conference was to discuss the scopc of next summer's training activities of the battalion. Attending the conference with LTC McMillan was Major Albert Stallings, Lieutenant Norman Dean and Sergeant First Class William Harrelson. Units of the 2/252d Armor are located in Raeford, Red Springs. Laurinburg, Sanford, Southern Pines and Lumberton. Also present for the conference were Major General Clarence Shimer, Adjutant General of North Carolina and Brigadier General Robert Hughes, Commanding Officer of the 139th Support Center of which the 2/252d Armor is a subordinate unit. Many national, state and local NAAC leaders will be program participants. The State Conference met here in 1954. At that time The Honorable Thurgood Marshall, now a Supreme Court justice, spoke bv candle lights due to Hurricane Hazel. The goal of the Robeson County Branches is to register 2000 blacks and to secure 1000 NAACP new members by the State Conference, with Hoke County's share 300 and 200, respectively. Teen-Ager Pageant Preparations are now being made for the fifth Annual Miss North Carolina Teen-ager Pageant to be held at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, April 24, 1976. Host Hotel for the three - day pageant is the Holiday Inn Downtown in Raleigh. The Miss North Carolina Teen-ager Pageant is the official state preliminary to the Miss National Teen-ager Pageant to be held in Atlanta in August 1976. Special guests at the Miss North Carolina Teen-ager Pageant will include the reigning queen, Lori Turner of Fayetteville. Contestants will be judged in scholastic achievement - poise - personality; and beauty. There is NO swimsuit or talent competition. Each contestant will be requested to participate in the volunteer community service program ot the National Teen-ager Pageant. This program teaches teen-agers to share and to participate in school and civic affairs. The pageant theme is "What's Right About America". A Mini - Modeling Charm Course will be given Pageant Week-end. The winner of the Miss North Carolina Teen-ager Pageant will receive a $500 cash scholarship, and an all - expense paid trip to compete in the Miss National leen-ager Pageant in Atlanta where all SO states and the District of Columbia are represented by state winners. Contestants must be between 13 and 17 years of age as of January 1, 1976. (Born on or after January 2, 1958.)
