?CANDIDATES? Continued from page 1 mayor's job. He has run unopposed in the last two elections. He is employed as an assistant planning chief in the Fayetteville office of of the state Department of Natural and Economic Resources. He spent 20 years at Burlington Industries. McNeill is an elder, deacon, and officer of the Presbyterian Church and member of the American Legion. McNeill and his wife, Ruth, reside at 514 Fulton Street. The couple has four children. With the deadline for filing noon on Friday, two remaining incumbent councilmen have not yet announced plans as of Tuesday. ?TARHEEL SPOTLIGHT? Continued from page 2 and serving without pay, answered. In addition to the mountain men from western N.C. and present Tennessee, 400 Virginians, the North Carolina militia, and several hundred South Carolinians showed up for the fight. Thinking he could easily defeat this ragtag bunch, on Oct. 7, a Saturday, Ferguson decided to halt his march toward Charlotte and tmake a stand at King's Mountain. At the same time, he informed General Cornwallis of the situation, hoping the British commander would send reinforcements. Patrick Ferguson, probably the best marksman in the British army and inventor of the first breech loading rifle ever used in warfare, surprising decided to defend the area with bayonets! Completely confident he could defend the position, Ferguson's patrols were lax, and he was therefore surprised at the appearance of the "impromtu army," who attacked up the mountain first from one side then the other. The opposing forces were about equal in number, but in numbers only. The mountaineers, completely at home in the terrain, had a decided advantage over the Tories, who were defending a position chosen unwisely by Ferguson. Although Ferguson fought bravely, racing from one position to another sustaining his troops, the "bold, brave" mountain men fought like "devils possessed," and in less than an hour, had turned the tide of battle. Although carrying ax or seven bullets in his body, Ferguson continued to charge about with his sword raised over his head until a ball through his head left him unconscious. He was taken to a spot under a tree where he died. For a few minutes, brother continued to fight against brother, but the loss of Ferguson was almost the signal to surrender, and white handkerchiefs began to appear. Ferguson's tactical errors led to the defeat and the far-reaching victory at King's Mountain. The triumph tipped the balance of armed support toward the rebel cause and so weakened Cornwallis that he was forced to withdraw and delay his further penetration of North Carolina for three months. This extra time allowed Nathanael Greene to arrive and take charge. The victory was a tremendous morale booster for the patriots as well as the beginning of the end for British domination of the American colonies. Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Va., just one year later. Oct. 19. 1781. Today at the battleground a monument rises to mark the site of what has been called "their finest hour." Councilman Crawford Thomas, Jr., who has been elected to three terms, is expected to run again. Graham Clark quoted Thomas as saying Tuesday he would file this week. J.B. (Benny) McLeod said Monday he has not made a decision yet whether to seek a second term. "1 just haven't Tiled yet, but I'm not saying I won't", McLeod said. "I do have some questions that I haven't completely made up in my mind. I just don't know". McLeod denied that he was disillusioned about serving in city government since indictments were brought against Gaddy and an ex-city employee, or that he was waiting to see who else will file. "My wife doesn't want me to (run). A lot of things worry me, but 1 don't want to bug out, or avoid anything", he said. All five seats on the city council will be decided at the polls Nov. 4. A SS fee is required from candidates filing for the council, and the fee for filing for mayor is $25. The board of elections office, now located in the new county office building on Magnolia St., will close the filing period at noon Friday. The elections office is closed Thursdays and Tuesdays. ?AREA INCIDENTS? Continued from page 1 complained that someone broke into his house Friday, Sept. 26, and did $50 in damage to his front door. Frances Stamps Thomas, Rt. 3, Raeford, reported that her bicycle was taken from her house sometime between 11 ajn. and 12 noon Friday, Sept. 26. The bicycle was valued at $75. Polly Thomas, Rt. 4, Red Springs, complained that someone took a motorcycle from her home Tuesday Sept. 2. Scout Leaders Meet A scout organization meeting was held at the Pig-N-Chicken Wednesday, Sept. 24 to set up scout functions within the county for the fall. Don Abernathy and Dick McNeally, Scout Executives from Wilmington discussed plans with Gene Carter, Brown Hendrix, Warren Pate, and Olarles Hostetler, of the Hoke County Scout Committee, and Scout Master Walter Blue, James Cunningham, Willie Ray Jr., and George Ashley. One of the main topics for discussion was the District Camporee which will be held Oct. 17-19 at the Clyde Upchurch Farm in Hoke County. The family of Archie Thomas McLean. 22P SUPPORT YOUR HOKE COUNTY RESCUE SQUAD Community Service Since 1962 MANAGEMENT MEETING- Dan Powers, manager of B.C. Moore and Sons Raeford store, recently attended a meeting of managers and officials in Cheraw, S.C., to prepare for the company's 52nd Anniversary sale and celebration. If God were to come to you today and in a dream or vision say to you: "I want you to sell your house and go to an island in the South Pacific where I will make you prosperous and prominent," how would you likely respond? Well, I don't have to be all that psychic to suppose how most of us would respond. It would go something like this: First, we would probably dismiss God's call as an overactive imagination, since people don't believe much in dreams and visions anymore. Secondly, if we did take the call seriously, we would say, "But God, surely you don't mean for me to leave my family circle." Family ties are too strong for many of us to sever, even if it is God who is calling us. Thirdly, we might also say, "But I can't leave the USA and live in a country 1 hardly even know." After all, we are accustomed to a certain way of life, certain living standards, conveniences and services that would hardly be available anywhere else. Fourthly, we might say to God, "But, Lord, I'm too old for this sort of thing; that's the kind of thing you ought to ask of a young man." No doubt about it, we reach an age where it seems there is less and less adaptability left in us and we look to the familiar for our security. Of course these are all responses which Abraham could have made when he received his call from God. His family was well - established in Haran. His whole clan lived there and in those days the clan was much more important than family ties are now. Abraham also could have protested that he did not want to leave his adopted homeland for a strange placc about which he knew little. He too could have questioned whether the vision was authentic. If anyone ever had reason to refuse on the grounds of advanced age, Abraham could have. The writer of Genesis tells us that "Abraham was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran" (12:4). Seventy - five years old! That must be a mistake. That is well past the age when most people think they still have a contribution to make. Surely God was mixed - up, had the wrong man! And, when at last Abraham and his party reached Canaan, they might have been justified in protesting that they had been sent to the wrong place. As the writer of Genesis tells us: "At that time the Canaanites were in the land" (12:6). That would have been the point at which many of us would have thrown in the sponge. So Abraham was confronted with a challenge: to turn around and go back home or to put up his tent in this strange new land. Abraham did not waver. Although he did not understand what was before him, "...he built there an altar to the Lord ... and pitched his tent" (12:7.8). Later generations would admire his faith: "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go" (Hebiew 11:8). When God says "Go!" what do you do?
