Large Fines, Suspended
Sentences Fill Docket
Suspended sentences and heavy
fines were handed down by District
Court Judge Joseph Dupree Friday.
Large fines were evident in an assault
case and a'DUl case, but no one
received active sentences in these
cases.
Lewis Locklear, Rt. 3, Raeford,
pleaded guilty to assult with a deadly
weapon and was sentenced to not
less than one day nor more than two
years, suspended on condition that
he pay $750 restitution and costs.
James trie Woods, Rt. 2 Raet'ord.
was found guilty of DUI, (third
offense) and driving while his licensc
was suspended and was sentenced to
two years, suspended for three and a
half years on condition that he be
placed on. probation for three and
one half years and that he pay S700
and costs.
Gerald Pittman, Rt. 2, Raeford,
was found guilty of permitting j
motor vehicle under his control to be
driven by an unlicensed driver and
permitting a motor vehicle under his
control to be driven by an individual
under die influence of intoxicating
liquor and was sentenced to six
months, suspended for two years on
condition that he pay $200 and
costs.
Lindsay A. Ant is, Fayetteville, was
found not guilty of driving without a
license, but pleaded guilty to
speeding (>8 in a 55 mph /.one and
prayer for judgment was continued
on condition Uiat costs were paid.
William Duer Frye, Hamlet,
pleaded guilty to speeding 65 in a 55
mph zone, and was fined $5 and
costs.
Alton Cartliens. Ri. I. Red
Springs, pleaded guilty to DUI as the
state dropped charges of reckless
driving and was sentenced to 90
days, suspended for 12 months on
condition that he pay $ 150 and costs
and not drive for 12 months except
for limited driving privileges. Blood
alcohol content was .17, according to
records.
Curtis Cummings. Rt. 3. Raeford,
was found not guilty ol assault wiUi
a deadly weapon with intent to kill
as the court found no probable
cause.
James Henegan, James Hill,
Raeford. pleaded guilty to public
drunkenness and was sentenced to
five day in Hoke County jail,
retroactive to Sept. 26.
Fred McLean, Raeford, was tound
not guilty of DUI.
Fannie B. McRae, Raeford, was
found not guilty of a worthless
check.
Albert Gray Ayers, Rt. I,
Aberdeen, pleaded guilty to no
financial responsibility and following
loo closely and was sentenced to 60
days, suspended on condition that lie
pay S25 restitution. S25 fine and
costs.
The state took a voluntary
dismissal on the following cases:
Curley C'havis, Hotel Raeford,
receiving stolen goods; William II.
Gill, Prospect Ave, Raeford,
worthless check. Fredrick Lee
Stephens, Fifth Ave., Raeford,
driving without a license; Ronald
Karl Smith, Mattliews. expired
operators license; Rebecca Ann
McNeill. Rt. 3, Raeford, driving
without a license.

The attendance at the Baptist
Church Sunday was good. Stanley
Brown, student at Campbell College
delivered the sermon.
Mrs. J. E. McGougun returned
home from Cape Fear Valley
Hospital Saturday. She was a patient
since Monday.
Mrs. Henry K. Crawford spent last
week with the Sumners. She returned
to Rowland Saturday. Mrs. O. L.
Howell of Charlotte spent Saturday
night and Sunday with her.
Miss Wanda Amnions of Campbell
Coflege spent the weekend with her
parents. M r. and Mrs. S. F. Amnions
and Stevie.
Mrs. Jack Hamilton of Lumberton
spent Sunday with her mother, Mrs.
A. F. Tolar. Visiting in the afternoon
were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Williford of
Fayettcvillc. Mr. and Mrs. H. M.
Williford of Rocky Mount spent the
weekend with his sisters. Miss
Mildred Williford and Mrs. Elizabeth
Tolar of Lumberton.
Deborah Forbes of Fayetteville
spent Saturday night with her aunt.

Miss Ruby Forbes
The funeral for Miss Ruby Forbes,
who died Tuesday was held at 3:30
pm Wednesday at the Red Springs
Funeral Home by the Rev. R. Y.
Flemming. Burial was in the Lumber
Bridge Cemetery.
Surviving are a sister. Miss Ruth
Forbes of the home, two brothers, T.
B. Forbes and Hunter Forbes of
Lumber Bridge.
Emerson Matthews Cottingham,
Gibson, pleaded guilty to speedine
68 in a 55 mph zone and prayer for
judgment was continued for two
years on condition that cost were
paid.
Robert Lee Emerson, Rt. 3,
Raeford, pleaded guilty to speeding
75 in a 55 mph zone and was
sentenced to 30 days, suspended on
condition that he pay S25 and costs.
Weldon Harris McKcnzie, Rt. 3,
Red Springs, pleaded guilty improper
equipment and was fined costs.
Lamon Dupree, Rt. 1 Raeford,
pleaded guilty to lying upon the
highway in such a manner to impede
regualr flow of traffic and was lined
costs.
David Eugene Jackson,
Faye ttev ille. pleaded guilty to
speeding 77 in a 55 mph zone and
was sentenced to 30 days, suspended
on condition that he pay S25 and
costs.
Weldon Harris McKenzie was
found not guilty of simple assault
and the prosecuting witness was
fined costs.
Bobby Lee Hunter, Rt. I, St.
Pauls, pleaded guilty to DUI and
refusing to give an uniformed officer
his name and address and was
sentenced to six months suspended
for three years on consition that he
pay SI75 and costs. Blood alcohol
content was .10, according to
records.
William Earl Brill, Lumberton,
entered a plea of guilty to speeding
65 in a 55 mph zone and prayer for
judgment was continued for two
years on condition that costs were
paid.
The state dismissed charges of DUI
against Preston Locklear. Rt. I. Red
Springs, as he pleaded guilty to
unsafe speed and was sentenced to
60 days suspended on condition that
he pay SI00 and costs. Blood alcohol
content was .10. according to
records.
Jeril L. McAnnis, Jamestown,
pleader' guilty to reckless driving as
the state dropped charges of DUI and
was sentenced to 60 days, suspended
on condition thai he pay S100 and
cost. Blood alcohol content was .12
