RtADY FOR HALLOWEEN- This jack-o-lantern seems to be ready to greet trick-or-treaters Friday night when they come around. Wildlife Afield 1 confess that I had mixed feeling when I read the short news item. It appeared in the NEW YORK TlMES and told how some 300 disadvantaged day - camp children from the Bronx had been taken to Central Park in New York City to gt fishing. They were provided cane poles. Catfish were trucked more than 400 miles to Lake Belvedere in the Park where they were released. ?ome 4.000 earthworms were flown in from Syracuse for use as bait. The kids, many of them fishing for the first times in their lives, caught 120 catfish. Certainly, it is a happy story in that these kids were introduced to the joys of fishing. I'm sure I can speak for millions of American fishermen in expressing the hope that those kids will get "hooked" on fishing and spend many long and pleasurable hours soaking worms. But somehow, there is something sad about the story too. It's hard for many of us, born and reared in North Carolina, to identify with a situation where there is no op portunity to hunt and fish. Imagine having to fly in a load of common fishing worms. Growing up in a hugh city is a Read Matthew 25:31-40 What's the use of saying that you have faith and are Christians if you aren't proving it by helping others? (James 2:41. TLB) Many of us Christians are so husy going to church, prayer meetings, and related organiza tional activities that we have not time for people. We rush from one meeting to another, while just beyond our door or even within our own home is someone with an unmet need. We all know persons who neglect to spend time with loved ones because they are committed some where else; they put off until next week or next month an overdue visit to a widowed mother, a lonely shut-in neighbor, or just giving their children the joy and security of being home with them several evenings a week. Being in a wheelchair. I have the opportunity to be especially aware of the thoughtfulness of others. How grateful I am for the neighbor who every week faithfully adds my shopping list to her own! Hers is a real Christian service, freely and graciously given. PRAYER: Lord, help me to recog nize another's need and enable me to do something about it. in Jesus' name. Amen. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Sensitivity to another's pain re veals our own sensitivity to God. - copyright THE UPPER ROOM , --Clara Bernhardt. Cambridge, Ontario. Canada foreign experience for many of us. Most kids growing up in the Tarheel State can dig their bait in their backyards and walk to a good fishing hole. For us. there have always been ponds, streams and rivers nearby. There are woods to walk in. trails to follow and hills to climb. We've got room to stretch, room to explore. Best of all. there are plenty of fish to catch and lots of wildlife. It's still that way in almost all of the Tarheel State, and that is a blessing and a gift we should not take lightly. Nor is it a privilege that we can ever afford to lose. 1 remember some years back when a 10-year old boy from mid-town Baltimore came to visit us for a week. Although Maryland is rich in natural resources and fishing is good throughout much of the state, this youngster had never wet a line anywhere except in a city park lake. 1 don't think he had ever caught a fish. One afternoon. I took him to a small pond near Raleigh. We launched a cartop boat and 1 paddled him around while he cast weighted plastic worm for bass. As luck would have it. he snagged into a three and a half pound large mouth that unzipped that pond from one end to the other. In desperation, the boy grabbed the line and hauled in the fish hand over fist. When the bass was in the bottom of the boat, my young friend lay on it to keep it from jumping out. Yes. you might say he was excited. When he left to go back to Baltimore, he carried the memory of catching that fish. I've lost track of him over the years, but I'll bet wherever he is. he's a fisherman. I don't know how to put a monetary value on that kind of experience, but 1 think you could safely consider it priceless. North Carolina has retained many of its resources of forests, rivers, lakes, fish and wildlife partly through accident and - more recently -- by design. We had no huge coal deposits, so our moun tains were not strip-minded years ago. Many of our beaches were inaccessible, so some of them remained relatively undeveloped until a sizeable portion went into the National Seashore. Bing a rural agricultural state, we were late getting in on the rapid industrial and municipal development. 1 have always had the impression that we considered this "back wardness" a curse. We weren't growing. We couldn't compete. Now . I'm more than ever convinced that these conditions were a blessing in disguise because they protected many of our most valuable resources -- the land, the water: our environment. If nothing else, our early "back wardness" bought us time. There is evidence that we may have learned some lessons from the mistakes made by other, more rapidly developing states. Environmental planning is underway in North Carolina, and already its good effects can be seen in many areas. Think of it this way. There is no reason why we can't continue our advance into the 21st Century and still carry a fishing pole on our shoulder. There's room for both. It's sort of like having your cake and eating it too.
