h'b'NCE ASKED - County commissioners were cool to the idea of erecting a fence around the civil preparedness office to keep through traffic out at their Monday meeting. In other words, have the same job but not the title. Have somebody else do the finance", Sessoms said. Sessoms said a pay cut for this new job position would be appropriate. "Ho had too much responsibility on him, anyway". Sessoms hinted that Gaddy may not have been guilty of die charges he pleaded no contest to last month. "I don't know. I would ccrtainly go John Gaddy's roule before Billy Barefoot's. I don't see why a man making that kind of salary would jeopardize his job", he asserted. Betty Smith, city tax collector, said Tuesday she no longer had a petition, and added she did not actually ask anyone verbally to sign it. "1 haven't asked anyone. I just took it out and let them see il. One person signed", she said. She said the petition was no longer in the city hall office. She said she gave it to the police department. -DOCTOR? Some Thoughts on being Thirteen Being thirteen, has certain prob lems that only another thirteen year old would understand. The biggest. I think, is learning how to get along well with adults. 1 have found that when dealing with grown-ups, it is wise to remember two things: (1) Always use your head (2) Never use your head. For instance, one day just before supper, my mother sent me to the store for a loaf of whole-wheat bread. They didn't have whole wheat. When I told my mother, she said, "Well, what kind did you get?" 1 told her I didn't get any. She looked at me as if I were some kind of imbecile. "For goodness' sakes." she said, "if they didn't have whole-wheat, you should have got something else! Why don't you use your head?" Not long after that, she sent me for some red oilcloth. The store didn't have any, so 1 bought seven yards of purple. 1 thought it was pretty. My mother didn't. She said, "Who ever heard of purple oilcloth in a red kitchen?" I told her 1 was only trying to use my head. But she said, "Well, don't! And in the future, if you can't get what I send you for, don't get anything!" See what I mean? There are other things that seem strange, too. If my father goes out for the evening, he tells me to "look after" my mother and sister. But if the family goes out and I want to stay home, my father won't let me. He doesn't feel comfortable if I'm home alone. That means I am old enough to "look after" my mother and sister but not old enough to "look after" myself! Figure that out. Another problem is what you should do when you trip over the cat and land with your head in the refrigerator, causing a large bump to appear above the right eyebrow. In such a case, your father could feel free to explode with a few choice words. Your sister could shed enough tears to dampen the whole room. Your mother could, and probably would, do both. But you? You are thirteen and can't do anything. You are too young to cuss and "big boys" don't cry. So you just stand there looking more stupid than usual. But in spite of all this, I still think thirteen is a wonderful age! Buddy McGirt and Mary Smith. 27C Accent On Agriculture Even when times are good, people have a tendency to talk and think about the "good old days." They reminisce about the "wonder ful past and gone forever" days when we were young and things were much better! 1, for one, want to disagree. No matter how bad some of our problems may be we are still the luckiest generation who ever existed. Maybe it's time for those on the nostalgia kick to be told that the glorious world of yesterday was in no way spared from some of the problems of pollution or drug addiction or crime or whatever. In the 1800's it is said that around 40 percent of America's farmers owned neither land or house. Farmers and their families toiled at least 16 hour a day merely to sustain themselves, and there were no hot showers or sanitary facilities. The urban laborer worked a 12 hour day, six days a week, no paid vacation, no Medi care, and no social security checks at retirement. However, he seldom made it to that age anyway! The life expectancy for most American males was age 38 com pared to 67 and climbing today. A woman could hope for 40 years then, compared to about 75 today. One or two out of every three babies died at birth, and only one or two out of three small suvivors made it to age 12. Heroin was said to be sold as cough medicine. Yellow fever and malaria were worse than the threat of scalping by Indians. The sight of children maimed by the so-called childhood diseases is a thing of the past - just part of the "good old days." Today we enjoy the bounties of the freest, strongest nation in the world. Its 230 million citizens enjoy the highest living standard the world has ever known. What we consider the poverty level is the median income of the citizens of the second strongest nation, Russia. Unfortunately, we do tend to measure our own times against a glorified image of the past. (UVCMDtK O. IV/5 YARD SALE: Saturday. Nov. 8th 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. several families. Located highway 211.
