The Hoke High Bucks discovered the* friendly skies Friday night as Joe Poole tossed five touchdown passes to help bury Bowman High School 53-30 in Wadesboro. "It's nice to win. The competi tion was more on our level," said Hoke High coach Bill Cameron. "We had a good night overall. I'm happy for the players more than anything else," he said. "We didn't have a good night defensively. We had too much arm tackling and they were able to spin off too much, but we still had a good night overall," he repeated. "It's nice to call a pass play that works. We went out there and found out that we could throw on them, and Joe (Poole) had plenty of time," he said. Hoke took the opening kickoff and fumbled on the second play from scrimmage and gave Bowman the ball on the Hoke 22 yard line. It took five plays for Bowman to run it in from the 11 yard line with 9:39 showing on the clock. The extra point was missed and Bow man had a 6-0 lead. . jHoke again took the kickoff and afrer three plays, Vernon Morrison rambled 66 yards for a score with 8:00 showing. The conversion was good and the score stood at 7-6. Defenses for both teams took over as the ball exchanged hands twice before the quarter ended with Hoke ahead 7-6. Hoke recovered a Bowman fum ble at the beginning of the second period and were held by the Bowman defense, but the Bearcats fumbled the Buck punt and Hoke took over at the Bowman 23 yard line. After a penalty put it back on the 28 yard line, Joe Poole hit Eddie Pennell with a 28 yard scoring strike to make it 13-6 with 9:12 remaining in the half. The conver sion was no good and the score remained the same. Bowman took the kickoff on their 15 yard line and a trick play the produced 45 yards helped them to score in only six plays with 6:53 showing to make it 13-12 Hoke afjer Bowman missed the extra point. Hoke fumbled following the kickoff and then intercepted a pass to take it on the 16 yard line before Joe Poole hit Pennell again in the end/one for a 14 yard pass. Poole connected with Thomas Farmer tor the two point conversion and Hoke had a 21-12 lead with 5:16 remain ing in the half. The Bucks held Bowman alter the kickoff and an eight yard touchdown toss to Allen Thomas closed out the scoring in the first half with Hoke leading 27-12. A fumbled Bowman punt in the third series of the third quarter gave the Bearcats the ball first and goal-to-goal on the ten yard line. It only took one play to score as Chris Cobb scampered into the end zone to make it 27-18 after the conversion failed. Hoke took the ball on the 20 yard line following the kickoff and rambled the distance in only six plays as Thomas Farmer scored from the three yard line with 5:50 showing. The extra point was good and Hoke was ahead 34-18. The Bucks held Bowman follow ing the kickoff and took the ball on their 23 yard line. Thomas Farmer reeled off 11 yards before Poole hit Allen Thomas for a 66 yard pass for a score. The extra point was good and Hoke had a 41-18 lead at the end of the third period. Both teams added two more touchdowns before the final gun and the score stood at 53-30 in Hoke's favor when the dust had cleared. The win brought Hoke's record id 3-5-1 ami left Bowman with a 3-6 record. Hoke takes on Laurinburg-Scot land tomorrow night for their homecoming contest. Scotland sports a record of 0-9. "1 talked to the Scotland coach last night and he's going to have them up for the game." said Cameron. "They haven't won this year and they'll be looking for their first win against us." he added. The score was tied 6-6 at half-time and it looked as though the Eagles might have their first tough game of the season. "We just didn't hit in the first half," said coach Wayne Mills. "We probably played the worst first half of the season and prob ably the best second half as we held them to only two first downs after intermission." he said. I he Wicker score was the first points the Eagles yielded all season as they scored 166 in six games. "The boys played exceptionally well in the second half and didn't make any mistakes." he said. Mills pointed to James Washing ton and David Home as standouts on both offense and defense. Oakwood Creeps Up By Waylon Fulk This week in bowling the Rae ford Moose Lodge maintained their lead, but had a rough night by losing three points to Webb's Tire, the third place team. The second place team, Oakwood Laundry, took three points from McNeill's Grocery. Earl's Electric took three of the four points at stake from Kennerty's Cleaners while Hunt's Bonding also took three points from the Raeford National Guard. Gentry's Tire gave the Hollings worth Barbers a rough night and took three points also. The high series for the night belongs to Ray Bullard of Webb's Tire with a 581 and a tine game of 218. The 200 scores were plentiful with Bill Hendrix of Hunt's with a 211. Howard Hendrix of Hunt's with a 210. Nov. ?) at 3 P.M. in the Student Union Building on the campus. The public is invited to the event which will feature a wide variety of choral "and instrumental groups. According to Marion Rogers, chairman of the department of music at Sandhills, the program will include every style of music rock, country, jazz. Dixieland, soul and popular songs from the musi cal comedy stage. A rock group from Raeford and a blue erass erouD from the area of North Moore will also participate in the festival at Sandhills. The performers will include sev eral student groups including the Sandhills Singers, directed by Mrs. Frances Wilson of the faculty and accompanied by Gerald Hersma; the SCC Concert Band, the SCC Orchestra, and the SCC Stage Band, directed bv Rogers and Basil Freeman.
