Gentry's Tire recapped the Moose Lodge four games, and Earl's Electric split four games with Hunt's Bonding Co. The bowlers will take off this week to be with their families on Thanksgiving, here's hoping for a safe and happy Thanksgiving. In an Emmy-Award winning script, Thanks giving takes on a deeper meaning as the Waltons find enough to be thankful for to celebrate two Thanksgiving holidays. presented by: The Bonk Of Raeford Member FDIC Basketball coach Says; 'Time Is Needed To Jell" "It will take a while before we'll jell," said Howard Smith, Hoke High basketball coach. "The bench will also have to help us a lot." he added. Smith seemed hesitant to make any kind of prediction about the coming season, but did indicate that if some of the questionable (because of inexperience) players come around, they could be contenders. "It's going to be tough. We're in a tough league and the competition is always strong," he said. He pointed out that he only had two lettermen returning from last year's squad even though he had eight players back who were on last year's varsity team. "We've played in that league before when we were all 3-A and it was one of the best then, I know it's going to be tough this year," he added. "We'll have to play good defense and shoot well when we get the ball," he said. Smith said that Lumberton, Pinecrest, and Richmond had to be considered contenders. He hesitated to say that Hoke (with a 19-1 regular season mark last year) would be a contender, but said that if his players came around they would be in the running. "If they come around, we're rigit around them", he admitted. He said he was especially looking for Johnny Carthens (6-1, senior). Marcus Brown (6-1, junior), qyd Mike McDuffie (6-0, senior) to help returning lettermcn Larry Black (6-0, senior) and Allen Thomas (62, senior). He said that Hoke would have to practice both man-to-man and zone defense this year, because it would be different from last year when he had large leads and he could use the zone exclusively. "We'll have to do it all this year," he concluded. Smith listed seven players of which he would probably choose five to start the first game. They were: Frierson Barnes, Larry Black, Marcus Brown, Johnny Carthens, Nate McNeill, Vernon Morrison. Tim Ross, and Allen Thomas. The total roster looked like this: NAME HT. CLASS Frierson Barnes 6-0 Sr. Larry Black 6-0 Sr. Marcus Brown 6-1 Jr. Johnny Carthens 6-1 Sr. Tim Frahm 6*3 Robert Graham 6-2 Sr. David Howell 5-11 Sr. Franklin Jordan 5-10 Sr. Mike McDuffie 6-0 ar. J.V. games start at 5:00 Out Of Bounds By Mike Steadman In this week's paper the Hoke basketball schedule is printed and everyone can see for themselves that the team's opponents this season stand up to 4-A standards. All games are with 4-A teams except two back-to-back battles with Red Springs. One could hardly slight the Red Devils though, because they have had a fine basketball tradition in the past. Not much has been said so far about how tough the competition will be in the Division IV conference, but I don't think things will ease off any just because athletic warfare will take place indoors instead of between the goal posts. Last year's team was a pleasant surprise and there are undoubtedly high expectations arising from local fans about this year's team even though some good talent was lost due to graduation. Don't worry fans. Coach Smith will have the Buck dribblers ready for action come Dec. 5. Hoke grapplers will also soon hit the mat to hold a school tradition true-to-form. This tradition, of course, is winning, and Hoke always seems to come up with some stars for this sport. Wrestling is an individual sport and emphasizes a strong will to put out 100 percent whether the semi-pugilist wins or loses. Effort has never been the question in this sport. Don't forget the girls. I am glad to see that Hoke has a girls's basketball team. Coach Long will be trying to improve her split season record of last year. When you think about it -- an even win-loss record in the first year of competition is not bad at all. That says a lot for you, Coach Long. I was told earlier that a lot of girls are going out for basketball this year. It's good to see the interest. All I can say is good luck to all the teams that will be soon competing for the conference and the state crown. Hoke has been represented well in the past and 1 don't see any change in the future. Sportsmanship and competitive spirit have always been emphasized at Hoke High and the athletes have always represented the school well. This representation not only reflects on the school, but on the community Hoke High Wrestling 1975-76 SCHEDULE Dec. 1 Reid Ross Home Dec. 4 Pine crest Away Dec. 8 71st Away Dec. 10 Pembroke J.V.
