SWh.ARING IN - The first order of business for the city council was taking the oath of office. Left to right are David Ix)vette, Sam C. Morris, Graham Clark, Crawford Thomas, Jr., and Benny McLeod. County's Cost $50,000 For Armory National Guard officials are expected to present plans for the construction of a new Armory in Raeford which will require about $50,000 in county funds before a joint meeting of the county com missioners and city council in January, it was learned Friday. The present Armory on Central Ave., built in the 1930's, is scheduled to be replaced with a new facility within the next 24 months at a projected cost of about $400,000. C.WO Jesse Jones said. The county's share of the cost is 12.5 percent, with the balance paid by state and federal funds which have already been allocated, Jones said. "If the county is able to fund their part, then the old building would revert back to the county for whatever they wanted, a recreation center, or whatever. I got a call from Col. Elbert McPhaul, engi neering officer for the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs in Raleigh, and he requested that I schedule a meeting in January for the county commissioners and the town councilmen to discuss it". Jones said. "This building was not designed for what we are using it for", Jones said. "We need more classroom facili ties. office space, and the main advantage of a new building would be shower facilities", he said,. The present Armory is also designated a battalion head quarters and is classed as a 100-150 man unit, Jones saia. which puts it in line for re placement in the $400,000 range. A minimum of five acres of land and water and sewer accessibility is required in any proposed site. Jones said a new Armory would mean more storage space, as the present is inadequate. "We don't have storage facilities for the vehicles that meet state requirements, as set by the De partment of Army." Jones said. Jones added that some of the vehicles have to be kept at Red Springs because of a lack of space afforded by the outside sheds here at the Raeford Armory. A new building would also contain a rifle range. Jones said, and it would mean eliminating trips to Ft. Bragg for the guardsmen for ARMORY SITE - The National Guard Armory on Central Ave., built in the 1930's, is scheduled for replacement with a S400,000 new building. shooting practice. No date for the meeting to discuss the proposal was an nounced, as Jones said he was awaiting word from county manager T.B. Lester. Farm Items W.S. The "Nickels for Know How" vote was favorable in Hoke County in the voting on November 25, 1975. The official count showed that 172 voted for extension and 24 voted against extension. 196 in dividuals voted at six polling places. A nickle on each ton of fertilizer and ton of feed is collected and turned over to a board to set up various research oroiects that ben efit farmers. The program has been going for a number of years and has helped to control some diseases and insects that attack our crops. Some information has been re leased recently on the trends of infant mortality in North Carolina from 1940 to 1970. In N.C. 58 infants for every 1,000 live births died before reaching their first birthday in 1940. By 1970, the rate was down to 23.7 per 1,000 births, representing a 59% reduction. In Hoke County the rates were 57.4 in 1940; 46.4 in 1950; 39.6 in 1960 and 29.3 in 1970. We have made great progress here over the 30 year period but we are still above the state average.
