Girls Lose 48-26 The Hoke High Lady Bucks dropped their first game of the season against Pine Forest Friday night by a 48-26 margin. A balanced scoring attack was not enough for the Bucks as they fell behind in the second quarter and were not able to stage a comeback. Lena Servien had nine points for Hoke followed by Tondca Jackson with five. Sandra Lemon scored 22 points for Pine Forest to aid their victory. It was the season opener for both teams. Hoke is at home tonight (Thursday) against the Red Springs girl's team. Out Of Rounds By Mike Steadman Hoke was ranked number nine in ihe Fayetteville Times Cape Fear Region rankings, but failed to crack the top fifteen in the state 4-A poll. The region scale included six Division HI teams and four Division IV teams. Richmond, Sanford Central. Lumberton, and Hoke were all listed in the top ten with Richmond and Sanford holding down second and third respectively. Only Richmond and Sanford are ranked in the state poll. During their regular season, the Bucks play ten games with ranked teams. Of course, these rankings will change, but a.pre-season poll usually tries to place the teams as they will end up at the season's end. Hoke's power will be tested in their first encounter against eleventh ranked Pine Forest at the Fayetteville team's home court. That should be worth watching. It also should give Hoke fans an idea of what to expect this year. The first home game with Red Springs has been changed from Friday, Dec. 12, to Thursday, Dec. 11. because the game conflicted with a Rael'ord police dance-rap session set up for die young people of thy county. Hats off to Allen Edwards for being so cooperative and making such a worthy cause capable of going on w ithout conflict. It's hard to believe, but it's true. The Upchurch Middle School starting five will actually be taller than the starting Buck five this year. Their shortest man is 6'-0". W.K. Morgan told me that the team will be or is better than any J.V. team he has ever coached. W.K. had some pretty good teams when he was at Hoke High a while back. Hoke's basketball future looks beticr every day. I'm sure Coach Long has the Lady Bucks ready for combat. Time will tell, but a combination of her coaching talent teamed with the athletic talent of women at Hoke High, could produce a championship team in the future. The Upchurch School even has a girls' basketball team this year. That's what 1 call building for the future. Good luck to Coach Scott! What is a coach? Webster's Dictionary defines it as an instructor in athletics. Actually it involves much more than that. A coach is a mother, father, helping hand, judge, jury, supporter, tyrant, teacher, lecturer, dietician, friend, enemy, human being, crying towel, mistake maker, nursemaid, enthusiast, degrader. child, mature individual, weatherman, winner, loser, and most of all, a person who cites his or her own mistakes with feeling far beyond the feeling of the observer. Bucks Drop Trojans By Mike Steadman The Hoke High Bucks basketball team started its season on a winning note Friday night in Fayetteville as they held off a desperate comeback attempt by the Pine Forest Trojans and claimed a 70-67 victory. Allen Thomas led the Bucks to the win with 22 points and dazzling play from all over the court. Thomas' effort was supported by guard Larry Miller's 16 points and Nate McNeill's 12. High scorer for the Trojans was Kyle Powere with 22 and Mackie Marquez's 16. The score was tied many times in the first quarter as the teams traded baskets. Two quick scores by Allen Thomas w ithin the last 51 seconds of the period gave Hoke a 18-lb lead as time ran out. Two fast scores by the Trojans in the first 1:21 of the second quarter gave them a 20-18 advantage. Pine Forest then outscored Hoke 6-2 in the next 2:35 and claimed a 26-20 lead before Thomas' three point play got the Bucks back on the scoring track. Larry Black and Frierson Barnes then helped the Bucks outscore the Trojans 16-6 with crucial shots and tough rebounding. Hoke held a 36-32 halftime lead. The Bucks scored first in the third period with almost two min utes gone with a free throw . The Karate Team Places A leant from the Karate Institute of Raeford ant sibling of four students was involved in competition at Lee Field House Monday night at Ft. Bragg. Sgt. Don Black won a first place gold medal. Barry Hcnlv and Gene Met/ger won second place silver medals, and Gary Taylor also finished with a second place silver medal. scoring was scarce by both teams ' most of the period as Miller proftd he could handle the ball and amazed fans with driving layups and set shots. Hoke out scored the Trojans 11-7 in the period and held a 47-39 lead. Barnes and McNeill led Hoke to a 15 point lead with just 3:35 remaining in the game before Powers' three point play started the Pine Forest comeback. The Trojans' full court press produced two straight Hoke turn overs that turned into points for the home team. Pine Forest pulled to within six points at b5-69 with only 1:39 left as Powers poured in 11 of his 22 points in the last quarter. A Hoke time out pulled the Bucks back together and they held on for a 70-67 win. Barnes and Black added nine points each to Hoke's cause and Marcus Brown finished with two. The Bucks next two opponents are faced back-to-back as they took on Goldsboro last night and are at home tonight (Thursday) against Red Springs in their first home game of the season.
