PI.AY PRACTICE ? Mrs. Dorothy Riddle helps members of the TMR class of West Hoke School practice for their
Christmas play they are planning to perform for the student body and guests soon.
TMR Teacher Says:
'Class Learns Through Play'
By Mike Stcadman
"People tend to look at their
disabilities rather than their abili
ties." said Mrs. Dorothy Riddle.
TMR (trainable mentally retarded)
teacher at West Hoke School.
Mrs. Riddle was referring to her
class of seven TMR students who
are taught such basic skills as
cooking, food preparation, follow
ing directions and functional words
and how they are used.
The class was split this year into
higher and lower age groups and
Mrs. Riddle teaches students be
tween the ages of 14 and 20.
"At this age the students need to
be learning vocational skills, and to
become as independent as possible
because when they leave here most
of them will be going to the
workshop in Laurinburg," she
said.
"It's better for the community if
they get all the education they can.
because they can be of economic
usefulness, rather than in an
institution or similar dependent
situation." she added.
The class has been preparing and
practicing a play that will be
performed this week for the West
Hoke student body and guests.
Mrs. Riddle said she took the
play, "The Happiness Tree"
Gail E. Haley, out of a magazine
and the kids have been practicing
since the first week in November.
"They are progressing and are
getting a little bit better every day."
she said.
"At first we practiced once a day.
but recently have been practicing
twice a day since the play date is
coming up soon." she added.
"Thev are so excited. It's proba
bly the biggest thing they have ever
done." she contended.
The play will last about 30
minutes including the group sing
ing six Christmas songs.
Mrs. Riddle says the play teaches
a message to_the audience and her
class.
"The kids will wear costumes
that my aide. Mrs. Dawn Burrows
and 1 made. Some of the students
did part of the scenery for the
play." she added.
"It teaches them that many
different things make different
people happy." she said.
"It tells them that if they want
something that will make them
happy, they have to look for it." she
added.
Mrs. Riddle compared the mes
sage from the play to the way the
students learned things in her class.
"The students are taught that
things they want have to be worked
for and the results have been very
good," she said.
"Things that people take for
granted such as telephone skills,
and everyday grooming, don't come
naturally for them and they are
learning to use these skills in their
daily routine." she said.
"It's very rewarding to see the
students progress and learn things.
1 think this play is very important
in their learning process. It is the
biggest deal of their lives." she
concluded.
