Tasks taken for granted by most people, yet for some 12,000 persons in Hoke and Moore coun ties who have never mastered these fundamentals, the chance to attend classes and learn basic education skills can make a tremendous difference in their lives, and may mean a job for the first time. The Hoke County Adult Basic Education (ABE) class is sponsored by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and taught by Sandhills Communit College. E.B. Coleman, chairman of th adult basic education at Sandhill; is enthusiastic about the program "Much has been done, yet we hav not reached thousands who couli and would profit. Many simply d< not know such training is available Many others need encouragcmen to enroll". Coleman said. Six of the 12 students enrolled ii the class held in the old count; office building in Raeford recentl completed their frst ten weel session and Coleman and in structors Clara Frierson and Lor raine Graham expressed pride ii the group's accomplishments. "One ladv started with us am she couldn't so much as write hei own name. Well, now she is going to the blackboard and writing numbers for subtraction. Yoi should see the change, and how happy she is knowing she is reall) learning". Coleman said. "Our goal is to reach as many people as possible through the program", he said. In addition to the CETA class, other classes are held at Scurlock school. West Hoke elementary, and Hoke High. A class is also offered at the South Hoke community center. A new ABE class will begin Jan. h at I P.M. in the old county office building, for persons who are unable to attend in the evening because of w ork schedules or other iiintlicts. Classes arc all free of charge, cxcept for a $2 enrollment fee. Stonewall Report By Miss Ida Graves Esphesus Baptist Church presented their Candle Light Christmas program Sunday night. There were many attending. The program was directed by Mrs. Nancy Black. Mrs. Martie Jackson and Mrs. Barbra Jackson. The children in the program were from lour to fourteen. The organ music was by Mrs. Barbra Jackson. After the program, the members pounded Rev. and Mrs. WiUard Singehary. and refreshments and cookies and cake was served in the basement, with a wonderful fellowship together. Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Fowler of Fayetteville were Sunday guests of the Graves' family. Mis> SaIIic Graves returned home with the Fowlers for i few days. Mrs. Fowler has been in a wheel chair for the past nineteen years. Mrs. Jim Maxwell. Mrs. John Covington. Mrs. Mary Monroe and Sail ic Lynn attended a bridal shower honoring Miss Lynn Britt in Lumberton Friday night. Miss Brut received many lovely gilts. The wedding will take place in January. Miss Britt is engaged to Jinimie Maxwell. Mrs. Leona Chason and son Ronnie's guests were Mrs. Mary Shelton and children Regenia. and Rebecca. Also were Mrs. Peggie Smith and Mrs. Velda Ayscue. Sunday. Mrs. B.F. McGregor and Miss Jcnnctte Middle I on spent Sunday in Salisbury-, with Mr. Lonnie Harris, and Joe Harris Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Harris and Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Harris are Miss Middleton's brothers and sisters ? in - law. Glad to report Mrs. McGregor is improving from her illness. Mr. and Mrs. Mack Sandy visited Mr. Sandy's mother. Mrs. Maude Sandy in Atlanta, Georgia Sunday. Mack Sandy and J.C. Himmingway and Mr. Sandy's nephew Frank Sandy entertained the patients at the Rest Home, with music and singing. Mr. and Mrs. George Maxwell and children plan to spend the holidays with Mrs. O.B. Maxwell. Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell are from Indcava. Pennsylvania. Mrs. O.B. Maxwell spent last week in Raleigh with her children. Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Melvin spent the weekend with Mrs. O.B Maxwell. Also Mr. and Mrs. Melvin's children Charles and Kimberley. We are glad to report John Glisson will come home for the holidays Thursday if weather permits. Mrs. Glisson reports, Mr. Glisson is in need of a wheel chair.
